Overclocking with different RAM possible?

I jsut got my watercooling and was thinking of overclocking my CPU, but I have 6gb of mixed up ram (2x2gb G-Skills and 2 x 1gb OCZs). I was wondering if I could overclock with it like this and how much harder would this make it if I could?

Hi.

Yeah you can since your CPU comes with unlock multiplier, so, you don't need use the FSB for overclock.

Mixing performance memory can and will make it harder to overclock... if you use the ref clock. This may not be a problem since the 965 is a black edition.

I know it has an unlocked multip[lier but what does that ahve to do with my RAM? I've never overclocked btw, so please try and bear with me.

The CPU frequency is calculated using this: Reference clock (200MHz) x CPU multiplier (x17 on your CPU), so, 200MHz x 17 = 3400MHz that is the stock frequency of your CPU.

The FSB is linked with your DRAM frequency, NB frequency and HT frequency. With a locked multiplier CPU (Athlon II series) you only can overclock the CPU using the FSB, but like I say above this is linked with the frequency of those settings, so, when you rise the FSB the DRAM frequency will rise too. 250 x 17 = 4250MHz on your CPU, but with NB frequency, HT frequency and DRAM frequency changed too because you changed the FSB.

The mixed RAM is a problem is you only can overclock using the FBS, because the mixed RAM could be no stable, more when those have different speeds and timings.

Now, with an unlocked multiplier CPU (Phenom II line) you have two ways for overclock the CPU, one is using the FSB as a locked CPU, or using the multiplier since this is unlocked. What is the difference?, the multiplier isn't linked with any other thing, so, if you change the multiplier you only affect the CPU frequency while the DRAM frequency, NB frequency and HT frequency keep stable without changes. 200 x 21 = 4200MHz on your CPU, now the difference is that your NB frequency, HT frequency and DRAM frequency has not change since you changed the multiplier and not the FSB.

It definitely did, I just had no idea you could actually get stable overclocks with just multipliers.

its not always stable. my 555 BE was more stable at 250x17 then 202x21. but it will always come down to what the cpu likes and dont like.

I'm testing it out at 3.7ghz, 18.5 multiplier with 1.4vcore. Getting to 19x is being a pain.

Like redhat_ownage says, not always is stable. You can rise the multiplier of your 965 to get 3.6GHz or 3.8GHz and exist a high possibility that can be stable without do any other change (Voltage CPU change).

But if you try to go higher 4GHz using only the multiplier, the possibility that you need add voltage to the CPU is very high, since the stock voltage isn't enough for that frequency.
