6950 Flash Reported Damage

There have been reports, at TPU, that several 6950 are having issues or permanently damage after the 6970 flash.

On three polish forums tham I'm addicted to (nvision, purepc, benchmark), there are more than 10 permanently damaged HD6950. All damaged cards have HD6970 bios.

Those who modded the 6950 to unlock shaders only are in the safe zone. No reports of any problem so far.

Here's another article explaining the difference b/w a 6950 and 6970. It explains that the 6950 flash is not a true 6970 due to a few factors and mainly the ram timing difference. Which is speculated to cause problem or damages in the long run.

Pass the word around guys... I hate to see your card get damage...

I've had no problems. "17 cards in the shop i'm working on".. lol. Anyways, mines fine so i have no problem. Worst that can happen is me having to RMA it. No worries.

I appreciate the post and concern. Some may have not researched and in haste took the risk. Most seem to have no problems but some do. I did not want to take that chance on my two 6950's for 580.00 so I unlocked shaders and OC to 880 / 1375 no problems. The bottom line is that it is the same result as the 6970 bios flash but safer for me.

I also unlock shader only using my original bios and overclock it. I've heard a lot of people saying flashing 6970 bios is basically risk free because of the dual bios. Unfortunately, that's not the case and I hope people can learn from other experiences.

All 6950's are the same. They only have different stickers.
