[CVG]Blizzard threatens 'World of StarCraft' modder - Page 3

In December 2007, Activision announced that the company and its assets would merge with fellow games developer and publisher, Vivendi Games. René Penisson, formerly a member of the Management Board of Vivendi and Chairman of Vivendi Games, would serve as Chairman of Activision Blizzard. Bobby Kotick, once head of Activision, was announced to become President and CEO of Activision Blizzard.

In April 2008, the European Commission permitted the merger to take place. The Commission essentially needed to approve that there weren't any antitrust issues in the merger deal.[7] On July 8, 2008, Activision announced that stockholders had agreed to merge. The deal closed on July 9, 2008, and the total transaction was an estimated $18.9 billion.[8] Vivendi was the majority shareholder, with a 52% stake in the company.[8] The rest of the shares were held by institutional and private investors and continue to be traded on the NASDAQ stock market, for the first 10 trading days post closing as ATVID, and subsequently as ATVI. Jean-Bernard Levy will replace René Penisson as chairman of Activision Blizzard.[9]

Activision and Blizzard Entertainment still exist as separate entities.[10] The holding company does not publish games under its central name and instead uses its subsidiaries to publish games, similar to how Vivendi Games operated before the merger.[11] The merger makes Activision parent company of Vivendi Games former divisions.

While Blizzard retained its autonomy and corporate leadership, other Vivendi Games divisions did not. For example, long-time label Sierra ceased operation. With the merger, there was a rumor that if a Sierra product did not meet Activision's requirements, they "won't likely be retained."[12] Some of Sierra's games such as Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon and Prototype have been retained and are now published by Activision.[13] Also, due to the closure of Sierra, the Sierra Community Forums servers have been shut down as of the 1st of November 2008.[14]
Blizzard is still autonomous. Activision has no say in its operations.

I STRONGLY doubt this is the case at all.

EVERY DAY (big/small) media companies are filing take-down and cease-and-desist orders against everyone from Google to this guy. Do a Google Image Search for any recent movie screencap-and in the results at the bottom there will be a DMCA removal notice of results redacted under take-down complaints. This is no different.

The guy used Blizzard's brand/trademark/etc without paying royalties and without permission. It sucks for we the fans, but that is how it is.

This is PRECISELY why FalloutNexus and NewVegasNexus have little or no mods porting content from say Mass Effect.

How annoying, as soon as Blizzard does something that people don't like, people go crazy and say it is Activision's fault. Blizzard isn't the greatest thing since sliced bread people, they are still out there to make a profit. They are just less evil and slightly more caring towards PC players than most companies.

Inb4 people not realizing its because of the name.

Hmm, that article is pretty short and doesn't really say exactly what Blizzard took offense to. Generally if modding is allowed you can create anything you want and freely distribute it. If you try to make a profit from your mods that is a big no-no. I'm not sure about the giving credit part, I suppose the modding tools might have something about that in there license, to give credit to Blizzard for the resources, but that is a small issue.

You know what Blizzard could have done though? Let this mod play out, if it starts getting big, they can take it and commercialize it. I don't think they would even have to compensate the modder. As far as I know any mods you make to games are still the property of the game's developer.

They reuse the animation skeleton frames. Seriously. Now that's lazy. I could beat it but that's lazy.
