New folder! That needs help!

Thread Starter
Hey y'all. So I finally decided to start folding. It wasn't a decision so much as a "if I fold it won't interfere with anything ever at all... plus it's cool for cancer". Realized this after I read another "ZOMG why fold!?!?" posts.

Anyways, two things:

1) Glad to be fighting the good fight for OCN

2) I feel like I'm not performing as best I could. I'm not looking to start cranking out PPD in the upper echelons, but based on my stats I think I should be doing a little better. That's probably close to 48 hrs of cumulative folding. Is my score (~480) my total number of points? So I'm getting about 240ppd? That seems low, considering my system can graciously be considered mid-end (I hope) and I see people talking about +10000ppd. Unless I'm mistaken. The folding FAQs I found that got me started seemed pretty barren in terms of instruction. Are there different "programs" for folding your CPU or GPU? or both? I would go full system when it's not in use but I'm not looking to turn my computer into a farm. I do a lot of encoding so it'll be fairly sporadic, but still.

Any help would be awesome!

EDIT: I also feel this could be moved somewhere more relevant. Should've looked over forum more. Monkey facepalm...

Follow this guide to fold on your CPU: http://www.overclock.net/folding-hom...mp-client.html

And follow this guide to fold on your GPU: http://www.overclock.net/folding-hom...gpu2-gpu3.html

Those two guides should have everything you need to get you started in the right direction

As for why your points are so low right now, there could be a couple reasons for that. You might be folding using the unicore client which is designed for older CPU's and gives out very few points. Or, you might be folding using the SMP client (the one you should be using) and your bonus points just haven't kicked in yet. You need to fold 10 smp units while using a passkey to start getting bonus points, but I'm pretty sure the guide I linked explains all of this.

Hmmm, alright.

Is there one... program (client?) that folds both CPU and GPU? Or do I have to run each separately, if I even can? Or do I have to just pick one?

Alot of people have been having good luck w/ this. Its supposed to set up all the clients and get you going real easy

Hmm, seems like a neat little program!

How do I fold a CPU and GPU though?
I've never used the tracker but from what I've read on here you just select what you want to fold on (CPU/multi GPU whatever) in the config page and the program does all the "hard" work for you. Or just follow both the guides linked by Hobie

Tried out the tracker, seems to work pretty well. DL'd everything for me, so that's good. Got it configured (or so I think).

Just started and my PPD is at 0.0. Does it take a while to get going or what? How long does a WU take to finish?
I'm not sure about the tracker, but the program I use (HFM) doesn't report accurate PPD until you have folded 3% of that WU. The WU's very greatly in how long they take to finish, some CPU WU's could take anywhere from a couple hours to over a day. GPU WU's are much shorter and should only take a couple hours each.

@HobieCat: Well, that did it. It hit 3% and I'm getting around 6k PPD. Thanks everyone!

6k for the CPU or GPU? (hopefully not both )

Your CPU can probably do 6k (with the best units) and the GPU can probably do another 8k or more depending on your shader clocks.

Good luck on your future F@H addiction
