Am I Being Scammed?

Thread Starter
I sold Mr. X an i7 920 D0 a month ago and received a message this morning from him with the following:

"It looks like the D0 i7-920 you sold to me is defective. I have gone through processor swap and motherboard swap, finding out that the i7-920 you sold me wont allow memory run at @1600Mhz. If you leave the RAM speed below 1500MHz the system will boot only every now and again. About half the time it will go through a double or triple reboot cycle before it comes up.

If you let it boot @ stock speeds (1066Mhz ram) it seems to work ok. Set it for 1600MHz along with the required 1.65v for the memory (and I tested it with Kingston Hyper-X 1600, Corsair XMS3 1600 and A-Data 1600 ram as well to remove that as an issue), and it will just reboot once with an F3 quickly (like when you reset the CMOS) and then pop to an FF and just sit there. Tried another motherboard, same thing.

I think I need return it to you since the cpu won't function normally, as 1600Mhz is officially supported by Intel @ 1.65v (Intels "max" approved voltage for memory)... Ie, the memory controller is defective."

I have run this chip at 4.2GHz for six months before selling to upgrade to an i7 970 and have never encountered the problems that he mentioned. I have used it in an Asus Rampage III Extreme, Asus P6X58D Premium, Asus Rampage II Gene, and Gigabyte X58A-uD5 with RAM ranging from Dominators, Dominators GT, Ripjaws, HyperXs, Patriots and Supertalents at speeds exceeding 1600MHz.

Suffice it to say that I find the problem described highly suspect. Add the fact that he left me no appropriate time to respond before filing a Paypal dispute.

Does this sound fishy?

Would appreciate any comments and suggestions on how to deal with this!

yes it is obviously a scam, how come it took him a month to get you this message

If he didn't leave you room to respond to all claims he mentioned, than something is fishy. I know when you get in a dispute you usually work out with a seller first and if that fails than you open a claim. Suicide runs anyone?

A month is way too long to have let this guy have his way with that processor. I wouldn't give him the sweat off my nads. And just remember, you are only being scammed if you give him back the money.

That's the first thing - suicide runs - that came to my mind. I would normally do a refund if contacted within a reasonable time frame but the transaction just made the 30-day mark today.

Indeed, he sent me a message in the morning and filed a dispute several hours later.
