My silly friend.. - Page 2

If he isn't overclocking then a boxed heatsink is fine. As most grab a better heatsink as they tend to overclock more or just live in a hot place.

Is he going to overclock or leave it stock? But the amd build is a nice one. If he tends to overclock and not do multi-threaded apps and synthetic benchmarks then the i5 and overclock the mess out of it and add the 6970 to it. Just depends on his needs and what he is going to run it at.

So you're saying a Phenom II x4 @ say 3.6GHz-ish (OEM HSF) with a 6970 would beat an i5 2500k @ +4.5GHz with a GTX460?

depends on your definition in beat. if its just gaming at high resolutions, then it would since games are mostly gpu intensive and not cpu dependent, in terms of synthetic benchmark and more cpu-intensive applications the i5 would be more efficient

In games yeah it will.
What games is he playing tho?

The primary games include BFBC2, CS:S, Combat Arms and CoD4 - from what I understand, they are all CPU heavy games.

even still a amd build wont experiencae any bottle neck even if he used the stock heatsink for overclocking. therefore his only downfall would be in multithread apps such as encoding and photo.

I'm telling him a i5 2500K + GTX460, totaling the same price, would out perform his.

Am I right?

EDIT: His rig is using the OEM HSF - Mine has a proper one.
For gaming the 6970 rig is going to win. Unless he's going to game at resolutions at 1920x1080 or bigger, the CPU won't bottleneck it (too much?) anyway.

In terms of a long-term upgrade platform I'd go with the i5, and get a different video card later. Though he could get the 6970 today and then get a Bulldozer down the road as an alternative upgrade path.
