Crossfire 6950's on 16x/4x mobo , worth it ?

As the title states would it be worth it for me to add another 6950 for crossfire in the 4x lane ? Some people say the performance would be crap but then iv read that the difference between 16x and 4x is only a few percent decrease in performance .. Can anyone shed some light on this situation ? id love a xfire setup , would be my first ..

Looking at your resolutions, you'd be fine.
Very little difference would be seen at your resolution with a x4 crossfire compared to x16.

I play all my games and run benches at 1080p , i dont want to pay $400+ for another 6950 if the 4x lane isnt going to be sufficient ...hmmm , any benchmarks using xfire on 16/4 ?

I've ran 5770 crossfire at x16 and x4 and was quite surprised with the results although I only ran it with crysis and Bad company 2.

Not too sure how results would be with dual 6950, there are various forums that it states that the Xfire bridge itself compensates for the difference in speed and therefore runs at 4xby4x.Then again this is all pure speculation.

Here are some benches done on a 5870 with various Pcie bandwidths.
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/HD_5870_PCI-Express_Scaling/7.html
Overall it's not too bad ,but it's all up to you.

Seems like the Video card maxes out at around 90% efficiency when at x4.

Note:microstuttering is a tad bit more evident.

only 1 fps difference between 16x and 4x at 1920x1080 , interesting .

After reading your post I pulled my 2nd 6950 out of the 8x to the 16x (better cooling in the 8x slot) and there was only one frame better in both Crysis and Metro benchmarks...confirmed for 8x. I know yours is 4x so....

I tend to stay away from Xfire or Sli mainly due to the fact that I've had horrible experiences especially with the gtx 470(heat transference was awful)and driver problems.

So now it seems that with the general benchmarks that were done with the Gtx480 and 5870 the difference in FPS using x4 as opposed to x16 was negligible.

Overall, I would recommend it if and only if you feel comfortable using Xfire, regardless of what the Pcie bandwidths because even at x16x16 the framerates are so close that it's not even a worry.
