6970 Quadfire Q's

Thread Starter
If you have seen my posts, I'm all over the place with builds. I spend 10+ hours a day on newegg configuring builds, reading news, blogs, rumors, etc on computing. I'm a undecided major with focus on programming/IT and may bail out into green energy depending on how bored I get with IT classes (I've been in the field for years now).

I'm focusing on a build I call NERDGASM. Estimated time to build is in the first of Feb. I've been putting up for too long with my Socket A dinosaur along with a tablet netbook (Atom) and a Pentium dual core laptop. I'm ready for an upgrade.

I've never had the "best" of anything so to say. I've settled with a ATI 5770, 6600GT, pencil mods on Athlons, and a really retarded trade from a unlocked AMD 555 to a 1055T (95W? yes, performance differences were HUGE). Although any semi current build has been traded off and given away, I'm now ready for the best but I don't want to look stupid doing so.

I want this build to last for a very long time. I've had my Athlon/Sempron for 10 years now and is stuck running Linux overclocked to 2.4GHZ along with my Radeon 9000 64MB.

The build:
i7-2600k
c300 128GB SSD
3x 1TB Samsung 7200RPM HDD
ASUS P8P67 WS Revolution
4x ASUS 6970s in Crossfire
3x 23" Acer 1080s in Eyefinity
Antec High Current PRO 1200W
Silverstone Raven RV02-BW
Noctuca NH-D14
2x GSkill 1.5V 1600 8GB kits for 16GB
2x mdp -> DVI adapters (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16815309008)

I also have a s2022a Compaq 20" monitor that's getting mounted vertical top center.

Questions. Will the 2600K @ 4.8Ghzish be enough to drive 4x 6970's at Eyefinity resolutions? Is 4x 6970's overkill for a build to last 3+ years? Is 4x 6970s really dumb and I should just do 2 now and 4 in the future? Is 4x 6970s even sensible?

And the golden question: Will I be happy with only 2x 6970s?

Thank you!

Quadfire is not good for anything except benchmarks. TriFire works much better. i have owned 2x 5970s in the past, did not end pretty.
i would just go with 2x 6970s... no need for 4... 6990 coming out around the corner of feb too...

I forgot but a TrackIR is getting thrown in with a huge emphasis on Arma 2. I haven't played it yet but have played BF1942/BF2 since it was released. Bad Company 2 seemed to be rubbish and Black Ops looks to be a knee jerk generation game as well. Crysis was mildly entertaining (although HORRIBLE voice acting, general cheesiness), Half Life 2 was kind of so-so. I've played Garry's Mod a TON (sad because the only others are hyperactive 12 year olds and I'm usually the oldest on the server). Fallout 3, oh how I wasted many weeks of my life on this game, mod after mod I couldn't stop.

Currently I'm limited to Counter Strike Source and older steam games on the Radeon 9000 (yes it runs well). I get to play BF2 on my wife's laptop from time to time.

Last time I had a half way decent system I found myself not really gaming much and instead running Powder Toy for days.

Who votes for 2x 6970s and only 1x 8gb ram kit? I can upgrade again this fall to BD/7 series and I may want higher speed memory?

Wrong platform for quadfire. You need to go 1366 or go with 2 6970s.

Eh? The ASUS WS Revolution supports 4 8x PCIe using N200s and has been validated as the board is engineered for this. TriSLI and Quadfire is the hallmark of this board and the whole reason for its existence, professional rendering OpenCL, etc

NF200.

For the money you are spending I would go with Triple Fermi.
