But in response, the reason it's going to be slow is because you're using outdated tech with a relatively new OS :/ Pentium's have been over for a while now, DDR2 memory is almost gone, this was hardware people would use with XP installs. So you're going to have to live with it until you can scrape up the money to get a newer rig. These days, if you can gather anything between $500-$1000, the good people at OCN will be happy to help you put together a rig that will be much, much, much faster than what you currently have.
500-1000 Dollars is a lot. I put together mine for $475 and mine will be future proof for a good 2 years until i should get a GTX card. Which his 8800GT will last him at least 2 years..

an SSD will cost about the same as the majority of the components in his computer. im betting he didnt prefer to have the Pentium D. if OP had the cash to put into his computer that an SSD would cost, he probably would have already done that.

Well, I'm just putting it at 500 bucks because it's a good mid-point. Of course you can go lower, and besides, $475 is only about $25 off, which you could scrape off a $500 system with MIRs and waiting for sales.

As a side note, 3.4GHz per core does not mean you just add it up and get 6.8GHz Each core runs at 3.4GHz, period.

Thanks for the input
Also, not really up for forking out a lot of money right now, but maybe in the future. As for the model of the processor, I'll get back to you on that tomorrow. As for the "slow" that I'm talking about, its pretty much load times and starting/running windows. so ya, hard drive and processor are probably my main problems.

Indeed. Your graphics card should be fine for the next year or two, as long as you don't game at 1920x1080.

ITs clock speed is pretty high (3.4? so just under 7 ghz which is pretty nice) But its just never going to load anything very fast. Also using a 40gb 5400RPM hard drive as your main os drive is NOT going to speed anything up. If anything 5400RPM drives are only used in laptops now... Like the minimum sata speed drive basically is 7200RPM.. The RAM isn't the bad part even though its DDR2 which is dying out.. But that processor and architecture is extremely old (not extremely but like 10 yearsish old) I recommend you upgrade your motherboard and processor to an Am3 Am2+socket and get at least an Athlon 2 processor (3 or more cores). Ditch the 40gb hard drive and install the os on a 7200RPM hard drive.. Just scrap together some moola from you barmitzva or however you spell it..

Your friend,
Andrew..
Ill talk to you on the bus Friday if we don't go to Brookes automation.. I can't wait.
i hope this kid didnt help you build your computer

Lol, I keep hearing that from people, but no, he didn't help build my computer. Still though, he knows more than me about computers and he is helpful, and I can use the help when ever I can get it.

That makes even less sense...3.4GHz is 3.4GHz, there is no doubling involved anywhere in the process of calculating CPU speed.
