You still can't push an unlocked 6950 to 6970 OC's with two 6pin (75w) connectors vs 6970's 6pin and 8pin (75w and 150w) connectors.

I've got 3x GTX260's and all but Crysis and Metro 2033 are playable with very decent framerates. I plan on upgrading to 3x GTX570's in a month or two.

So considering how good my experience is with GTX2xx series cards, the GTX4xx or GTX5xx series should pretty much own.

This is purely from an Nvidia point of view only, I am not saying any company is better than the other.

I don't know how much help I can be here, but I had 3 580s, and 3 6970s. (Specifically for Surround/Eyfinity on 3 30" monitors). I was able to run Surround on 2 30"s plus a 26" @5760*1200, but when I got my new 30", it wasn't the same sync polarity I guess, because it wouldn't let me run it. That being said, here are some points that I've found.

1. At 5760*1200, I cannot tell a difference image quality wise between the
2. At that resolution, they seemed to be on par together (couldn't notice a huge difference either way. but I didn't not benchmark them either.)
3. The 6970s (well, the top one runs a LOT hotter than the 580s) like hit's 95* while playing mafia 2 hot.
4. The 6970s are loud while gaming. The sound of the 580s sounds a lot more pleasing.
5. I hate Nvidia control panel compared to CCC. With a profile, it's nice because in about 3 seconds, I can be in eyfinity, or back to regular mode. With Nvidia, It would take at least 1 minute, no joke, and then it wouldn't even put the monitors in the right order, and it really pissed me off. Not to mention, they wanted 1 monitor per card, and when I enabled 3xSLI, I could only use 1 monitor (no temps on the other screens, or anything)

6. In terms of fps, the 3 580s beat out the 6970s by a little at 2560*1600 (while not in eyefinity/surround) but with high AA, the 6970s would go ahead, because they take barely a hit with AA enabled, weird.

Overall, I would say they are both worth buying, depending on what you like. Performance wise, they are very close with everything on at high resolutions. If you don't mind the heat and the noise, the 6970s are an easy choice if you factor in cost, and ease of use.

Just remember if you go nvidia, use the same monitors (for the sync polarity issue) That's why I couldn't run 7680*1600 with Nvidia.

I think 2x570s would be a good option. I have 2 470s and they run at 6100x1080 (really 5760x1080 but more because of bezel correction). I have no problem running new games at full resolution and max settings. I haven't really tried any games that are known for being difficult to run, but I have run Just Cause 2, DiRT 2 and Mafia 2 at full settings and full resolution and they run and work great.

While many people are suggesting really expensive 2x 580 set-ups, or pricy ATI set ups, I think 2 overclocked 570s will be great.

Just my 2 cents.

according to benches as stated above the 6970 is a little bit faster than a 570. It is also more expensive so the 570 would be the best bang for the buck, even better than 6950s. Every card is appropriately priced in its speed to cost ratio. It does not scale 1:1, but they are all in their places
2 x GTX460s had 1GB of memory so GTX480 was better because it had 1.5GB if the games needed more. Also GTX460 was a mid range card were HD 6950 is AMDs high end segment. It has more memory also. The difference in performance is less then 20% in most cases which is nothing to brag about being TOP dog.

Ive only tested a few games without vsync like F1 and Dirt and I recall getting well over 90fps on both. Don't quote me on that. I'll check my framerates with vsync off tonight.

Sounds great... I really appreciate all the info and feedback... +rep !!

I dont wish to take my chances unlocking a card.. that from what I hear does not actually perform as well as the card your trying to make it be.

actually you were a lot of help. Question is though... was this recently? or has it been a while. Because this is one of the issues I was reading in a dated review, that the Eyefinity was more user friendly swapping back and forth from spanned to single monitors. +rep !

(I'm adding a third to keep framerates stable when pushing Metro 2033, as well as Crysis 2...wanted to maintain a minimum 60fps no matter what I play) Metro easily causes framrate dips below 30fps when my settings are high enough. (so far, I'm at stock clocks...will be overclocking once I'm finished drowning my rig)

Look around on guru3d as well...there are only a few instances where 5970quadfire/6970CF comes out on top over 580SLI. I'm not a fanboy...the numbers speak for themselves.
I appreciate the info..... so tell me though... can you swap between spanned and single monitor set up easily? I hear you have to drill down into the driver set-up to do that and at times it may take a minute or two. I have been told Eyfinity allows hot keying this and makes it instantaneous.

This was recently. Just got the 6970s 2 weeks ago, got the 580s the day after they were released 2 months ago.
