I got the Enthusiast Bug - Page 2

For whatever reason, I grew up fearful of spending money. It's not the worst habit to have, but it takes the fun out of every purchase.

Me too.

I had an Athlon 1400Mhz with 256 RAM and a Geforce 2 GTS for 8 years before I got my current rig. But ever since buying this, I've been thinking about upgrading or actually upgrading on a regular basis. It's a horrible feeling, throwing away money like this. If I got a GTX 595, what's that gonna get me? 40FPS in 3dmark 2011? How good is that gonna make me feel?

Truthfully, this is part of it, for me at least. I'm sort of coming to grips with the idea that there's nothing wrong with a moderately successful guy in his late twenties whiling away the hours playing Mass Effect 2 or Dragon Age. Somewhere along the line I got it into my head that if I come home from work at night and then spend time playing games, even if I enjoy it highly, I'm doing something wrong.

But I think part of that is just social acceptance. I also enjoy cars, and shell out countless hours every week washing and detailing my Mustang. I get sideways glances for that too, but when you're out on a Saturday night shooting the breeze over some beers, which topic isn't going to kill the conversation? The car or the new GPU with 384-bit RAM?

Depends who you hang out with biggrin.gif

But in the end, would a nice new car truly make us feel any better than a computer upgrade? Maybe we'd all feel better if we knew for sure how to defend ourselves in a combat situation against another man? Wouldn't that make us more fulfilled, knowing that he we know how to handle ourselves in a fight, of which probably 90%+ men don't? Maybe instead of wasting our time overclocking our computers, running benchmarks, and playing games, we'd start working out and taking mixed-martial-arts classes?? I'm thinking about it. There's nothing wrong with what we do, but maybe if we looked at things from a different perspective all this GTX 595 and Ivy Bridge nonsense would seem trivial to us????

Yes, I'm concerned about constantly upgrading my hardwares but sometimes you gotta learn to live within your means and don't go splurging everytime something new comes along.

Beside, I got a lady that will put me in a "hurt locker" if I splurge. lol

I understand where you're coming from. It's never fast enough even though my rig will play any game on max on all three monitors. I want MORE! I've stopped my self from upgrading tho so I can save up to build a 4 ways sli kepler setup with dual xeons. It seems like the next logical stup since 580s are barely an upgrade.

you should do what my friend is doing (pretty much identical setup as you). Every time he sees himself going to spend money on a part he takes that money and puts it aside for a new build in Q4 of this year. It will end up being a much better rig. Not like your 280 can't play whatever games are out, just not dx11

It's cheaper than audio for me, that's why I originally got into computers, cheaper pieces to upgrade.

Just remember that most people have some money pit of a hobby. It's not like it's just us nerds. A friend of mine spent hundreds of dollars on a muffler for his car. I can't imagine doing the same, but I'm sure he can't imagine buying a new GPU.

If you feel that guilty about it, then just don't do it. Leave your rig where it is. Go train MMA like you said, it's healthy and you'll feel good. It sounds to me like you just need some motivation. Go for it, work out and learn a new skill.
