Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you did cut the slot (which people do) a PCI-E x16 card will function normally in an x1 slot. It will be greatly reduced in bandwidth but no processing power will be lost or damage will be done to the card. This is useful in a situation where bandwidth is not too important. For example, rendering or other GPGPU computations (like Folding) only need to send the data to the card once and then it is stored in graphics memory until the task is completed. The initial transfer would be slower but once the data was transferred, the card would have no other slowdowns.Edited by IEATFISH - 1/19/11 at 10:45pm
