Memory Recognized no Boot to OS?

Thread Starter

Hey all,

So this is just noob troubleshooting or something for most, but I'm pretty perplexed.

I just bought a RAM upgrade for my ancient school laptop (a Dell Inspiron 6000), went from 1GB of DDR2 (2 x 512MB) to 2GB (2 x 1GB). But it won't get past the "Starting Windows" screen when new RAM is installed. Oddly enough, it recognizes the RAM in Setup and can run Startup Repair processes. Is this an incompatibility issue? Or am I just missing something?

The new RAM is a 2GB kit of

SODIMMs. I am running Windows 7 Ultimate (32-bit). Anyone have suggestions or corrections?

Thanks!

If the RAM were a problem, it wouldn't POST. What happens that inhibits it from "getting past" the "starting windows" screen(freeze, crash, etc?

What version of windows?

That's what I thought...by all means, it shouldn't have gotten to the OS Loading screen without RAM.

Oh I definitely forgot to post my Windows Version. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate (in 32-bit).

The system 'freezes' on the Windows 7 loading screen. But it doesn't really 'freeze;' it just gets stuck at the loading screen while the W7 animation continues to glow & whatnot. I left it going for a good 30 minutes just to be sure, but no dice.

EDIT***

New development. I just tried to boot on just one of the new RAM sticks...and it worked. So if I can boot on one, why not both, I wonder?

Incompatible memory.

I've encountered the same thing with an ECS motherboard. Swapped the RAM it its fine. Put the same ram into another machine and it booted up fine with no errors in memtest.

does it load windows with the old RAM installed? I've seen a few systems hang at the "Loading windows" screen, though usually after a restart or two, they make it past it..=/

It works when new memory is removed? Does it work with only the new stick?

Ya it works with one stick of the new memory. But one stick only. When both of the new sticks are in, the system reads them, but hangs on the W7 boot screen.

Ya, it runs just fine when old RAM is installed. I've tried restarting many times when both new sticks are installed, but it hangs. As previously stated though, when 1 stick of the new RAM is installed, it boots normally---2 hangs it.

If it is incompatible, how does it start with one of the new sticks in it? I am pretty sure the new RAM is indeed compatible...otherwise it would not be read by the system at all. And it is.

Something else of note: the max amount of RAM the laptop's manual says it can take is 2GB. In setup, the amount is stated as 2048MB when the new RAM is installed. Could that extra 48MB account for the OS boot fail?

2048 mb actually is exactly 2gb. If you have more than the OS supports, it usually just ignores the excess memory. I wonder if they are trying to run in dual-channel mode or something... Just shots in the dark: you could try resetting CMOS or reinstalling windows. I know that sucks though...

They are actually running in dual channel mode. At least that's what the setup says. Are they supposed to be running single channel?

And reinstalling windows is no big deal.

EDIT***

Okay ya, so it's supposed to be running in single channel. Unfortunately, this ancient and limited Dell motherboard menu does not allow me to change anything for the memory setup. Is there a way to modify it to run in single channel?

Ha! Yes they cannot be running in dual-channel mode. This would not be a problem if the two sticks were identical. Are they? If not, I believe this is the problem.

EDIT: disregard, I didn't read your orignal most carefully enough. If you bought it in a kit, they can run in DC mode.

Both sticks of the new kit work when tried one at a time?
