Upgrade from 9800GTX+ to 570 Causing System Shutdown - Page 3

So why do we think everything connected to the surge protector would lose power at the same time the computer fails?

Ok I dug out the proper connector and switched it with the Y shape adapter and no more shutdowns. Huge relief, thanks a million.

Not outta the woods yet though, just ran the Mafia 2 and Just Cause 2 benchmarks and the results were just a little bit better than my 9800GTX+. So I'm gonna do a uninstall/reinstall of the drivers and hopefully that will improve performance.

After doing what Windfire instructed, if that doesn't work, you should plug the computer into the wall and see if the problem goes away.

The issue isn't the driver. If he installed the 266.58 drivers either before or after installing the new card, he should be fine.

What scores do you get with your 9800GTX+ and GTX570?
What resolution? (Do fill out your System Spec)

One friendly heads up: consider overclocking your CPU to get the better out of your GTX570.

CPU intensive games. If that Q9650's at stock, you're bottlenecked.

Not elementary at all!

Ok reinstalling the drivers had no impact on performance. But in the uninstall process i had a shut down problem again. I made it to the part where I needed to delete any nv_disp.inf folders in c:/Windows/System32/DriverStore/FileRepository. But it shutdown everything connected to the surge protector. So then rebooted into safe mode and used driver sweeper, rebooted, installed driver, rebooted, and back to normal.

But, just now ran the Mafia 2 benchmark twice and on the second time it shut down my system again, but just the system this time and not surge protector.

So fixing the power connectors has certainly improved things, but not completely.

I'm running all my games at desktop setting of 1360x768. I prefer low resolutions for ease of vision and to help performance.

However, my surge protector is pretty damn old, I got it with my Alienware from like 2003. Just dugout my old specs, it's a Powerware 3110 700 VA-400 Watt. (wow time flies, invoice date is 4/22/03) (It was a glorious rig, I spent nearly 3 grand on it, had the GeForce FX 5800 Ultra 128MB)

Could this be the problem? I know the PC PSU for a graphics card is key. But assumed the surge protector doesn't matter in this regard.

For what it's worth, here's my benchmarks.

Mafia 2
  • 9800GTX+:
    Average FPS: 22.1
    2nd run: 24.1
  • GTX 570:
    Average FPS: 24.4
    2nd run: 24.2

Just Cause 2:
  • 9800GTX+:
    Dark Tower: 33.62 FPS
    Desert Sunrise: 43.64
    Concrete Jungle: 23.71
  • GTX 570:
    Tower: 55.73 FPS
    Sunrise: 58.08
    Jungle: 31.90

Armed Assault 2:
  • 9800GTX+:
    Benchmark 1: 35FPS
    Benchmark 2: 15FPS
  • 570:
    Benchmark 1: 38FPS
    Benchmark 2: 18FPS

Surely the 570 should be getting much better results than this? Even with my Quad Q9950 2.83GHz CPU being a bottleneck. Also want to note, no in-game graphics settings have been changed from switching my old card for new card.

yes you should be seeing a difference at those resolutions. have you tried not plugging into the surge protector?

Mafia 2: Have you gone into nvcp and checked to make sure you have physX set to run on the GPU? Mafia 2 is a strange bird in that unless you have a fully dedicated physX card, the cloth physX runs on the CPU (only the particle physX will run where you tell it to in the nvcp). So w/physX high enabled and no dedicated physX card, it can become CPU-bound rather easily.

Just Cause 2: The improvements in those numbers (+50-60%) don't seem too out of line w/what I'd expect at such a low resolution. 9800GTX+ is a pretty solid card at low res. If you were comparing perf at something like 1920x1080, you see larger % improvements.

Armed Assault 2: I just don't know enough about this game to make an assessment, but it does seem odd to only get a +10% improvement in any game unless it's heavily cpu-dependent.
