[MCV]Sony: ‘Gamers want HD console MMOs’ - Page 14

Playing an MMO with a controller? Yea...right. Good luck with that. I can see it now: Tap UP+UP+DOWN+DOWN+UP+X+X+Y+LEFT+LEFT+LEFT+X to fire magic missile. Oh you want to summon big black scary guy? Try DOWN+DOWN+X+Y+O+O+O+UP+UP+LEFT+RT+LT+LT+RIGHT+RIGHT.

If the latest PC video card was optimized and had a game dedicated to the power it could render, that PC game without a doubt would destroy anything a PS3/Xbox could possibly produce. Though, PC's lack this dedication, so PS3/360 games can still continue to hold up to PC graphics. Not fully, but still within range, despite the fact it is old technology. Further explanation below.
Not to mention, a large portion of PC gamers are still dedicated to XP, that doesn't support DX11. So please, until every PC gamer is off XP, don't try playing that card.

A PC is a platform, but it is also just as much of a console as the PS3/Xbox Platforms.

Also, just because someone has some spare cash to invest in an expensive electronic (being this TV), doesn't mean they have the cash to invest in multiple electronics. If you had bothered reading my other posts, investing in a PC is a selfish investment when it comes to gaming. Consoles are cheaper, efficient, provides the same (if not better) gaming experience. While PC has more potential, that potential isn't used because there isn't a bar set. You still have people out there running Pentiums with integrated intel graphics. You can't optimize for a 5800+ or even a 9600+ when you want sales.

Nice post, but, I strongly disagree with the part I have bold/italiceised/underlined for ONE reason and ONE reason only:
GFX card makers produce new lines MUCH more quickly than the devs can cater to - in terms of programming.

Bear in mind that SOFTWARE is the MOST COMPLEX THING that humankind has EVER created.

^Read that line again, and, if you disagree then I would ask you one simple question: What has humankind created that is more complex and intricate than software?

IMHO---> There should be at LEAST an 18month hiatus on GFX card releases - not development, just releases... it seems that every few-short-months there is ANOTHER gfx card claiming this-or-that advance WHICH IS RETARDED!

This is my message to the hardware manufacturers:
FFS! Let the devs LEARN and DEAL WITH and EXPLOIT the hardware that is already out there before charging ahead with new-hardware-lines!

To the hardware manufacturers I would also say:
"Don't stop developing but PLEASE... for the LOVE OF GOD: STOP ripping off the consumer with your interim-crazy-upgrades and "new" lines! Slow down and the the software devs CATCH-UP!"

Nice try - but totally ignorant.
FFXIV seamlessly and flawlessly had PS2 and PC gamers playing ON THE SAME SERVER.
It can be done - and it can be done WELL.

Long answer: a traditional MMO is simply not possible on consoles both in terms of content and controls. Of course if there is a demand, some developer will make a cut down MMO just for consoles but anyone hoping for SWTOR or WoW equivalents will be sorely disappointed.

Well if you don't have spell casters, or casters were very limited in what spells they could use based upon level, then it would be very doable, but like you said, CONTENT is very important..

The game wouldn't be very content rich, and I'm not even referring to graphics, which would take a huge hit, unfortunately...

Console makers are looking for the next big game (like GTA etc.), but they don't realize that gamers migrate or graduate platforms eventually, they move from CCGs to RPGs to PC gaming, or whatever, no matter which genre of game they are currently in, they will migrate/port to a different platform eventually, and there may be one great game today, but players get bored of that game and move on to something else..

Some CCGs and RPGs eventually went to the computer, and I"m VERY glad they did, hauling around 4000 cards got old fast, or 20 books, whoosh!

You are 100% right, you just can't get the content inside of one DVD, no way.

Good for that. Is that final fantasy remake anywhere close to WoW in terms of users? Or will it ever be? No. MMO's can not be played well with a controller, and I don't care how you try to convince me otherwise. And no im not 14, nice try, game over.

FFXIV is your "Benchmark" for success at something, or anything for that matter?
That's close to being the worst MMO of all time by a major developer.

Sorry, but No. "Seamlessly" and "Flawlessly" have no business being in the same sentence with FFXIV, regardless of the context.

Newphase, if you were a programmer like me, you'd probably realize that many software makers have tools that they work with which makes creating games a snap (like a game making toolset), add to that fact that most software makers have X programmers on hand when they decide to make a game, it makes it a very fast event...

Now as far as the technical difficulty of programing, it's not as hard as some would have you believe, though it's definitely not for most people as it can rack your brain for a year or two (or much less), depending upon your level of education (foundation), programming in itself is NOT difficult or complex.

You redundantly create functions, use simple math most of the time (excluding camera & positioning which require much more advanced math), and often you have many libraries / functions / etc pre-made (by other programmers) to work with, so it makes programming a VERY simple task as a gaming programmer today, indeed.

Not meaning to argue or point out that your wrong, just trying to be informative, for I've programmed for 4 years in gaming..

Wasn't one of the complaints people had about FFXIV the interface? Hard to hold FFXIV up as an example of it being done "WELL" when the game was (is?) kind of messed up on launch.

Consoles and PCs can share a server; it's been done before, as I recall. The problem becomes 1. do PC Gamers have an unfair advantage, and/or 2. do PC Gamers feel their options have been severely limited because the interface has to account for a controller instead of a keyboard (AKA: do PC Gamers have to buy a controller for their computer)?

He meant FFXI guys. He did say PS2, read the whole statement. FFXI is a great example of how it should be done. PC, PS2, and 360 all on the same server.
