[Ars]World of StarCraft modder shut down, pleads for Blizzard approval - Page 5

Its not the "World of" that is the problem or that he uses "Starcraft" in the name. We know Blizzard doesnt care so much beacuse even in W3 we have mods like World of Warcraft or Warcraft Heroes or Warcraft X, Warcraft Y.

World of is also not the porblem since we have games like World of Tanks etc.

The problem Blizzard has is the COMBINATION of these two. Why? Because they already have a game called "World of InsertIP". Someone who just sees World of Starcraft without putting too much research into it will naturally assume that Blizzard is the creator of the game. Which they do not. Also since they USE World of InsertIP it is logical that they want to keep WoStarcraft/Diablo for themselves just incase in the future they DO wish to use the name.

He could call it Starcraft Universe and Blizzard would probably not even care.

I have a feeling they will not just let it go with a name change, at least not at first. Though they will probably come to an agreement eventually and it will remain the same mod with a different name.

He could probably get away with just "Planet of Starcraft" or anything similar.

The naming scheme is like Anheuser-Busch changing Busch to make light beer and calling it Busch Light. Then somebody mods Michelob to make something they call Michelob Light (if Michelob Light didn't exist and Anheuser-Busch didn't care if you modded their beer). Or if somebody modded a Ford Focus and called it a Ford Focus Cobra or something. Its just way too similar and obvious of a name.

a quoted statement we sent a short time ago to inquiring press to
explain the situation and the details of how we worked directly with
the mod author to resolve the naming issue.

Earlier this week, a player-made StarCraft II mod called World of
StarCraft and described as a “StarCraft MMO” was featured on a number
of prominent gaming news sites, catching the attention of gamers as
well as our own. With the name so closely resembling that of World of
Warcraft, we wanted to discuss the title of the mod with the
developer, and as part of our routine procedure, we contacted YouTube
to request the video be removed while that discussion took place. We
were also curious about the project and wanted to discuss with the
developer what the mod entailed.

It was never our intention to stop development on the mod or
discourage the community from expressing their creativity through the
StarCraft II editor. As always, we actively encourage development of
custom maps and mods for StarCraft II, as we’ve done with our strategy
games in the past. That's why we release an editor with our RTS games,
and why we feature top player-created content in the custom game
search. It's also why we held a contest to spotlight the best
community-crafted StarCraft II mods at last year's BlizzCon, and why
we’ll continue to improve Battle.net to better showcase player-created
content.

Like many players in the community, we’re looking forward to seeing
the continued development of this mod, and as part of our ongoing
discussion, we've extended an offer to the developer to visit the
Blizzard campus and meet with the StarCraft II development team. As
always, we appreciate all of the efforts of the talented and
enthusiastic mod-making community, and we look forward to seeing and
playing what they create using the StarCraft II editor in the future.

Sounds like bull****. "We had his videos removed and attacked him because it resembled another game we made..." etc.

If anything it was smart of Blizzard's part. By doing this, they got a huge publicity boost. Even the moder acknowledge that. Before it was just a cool mod. But then it became something that Blizzard took down, after it was made using their tools. By taking it down, they just made it even bigger. All that being said, that probably wasn't their intention.

The article is misleading. From what i understand at least, its "procedure" for the name copyright and the name needs to be changed.
He is still in dev.
