Ask me anything MSI and NVIDIA-related! - Page 11

Why did MSI stick with the 4+1 power phases while not being cheaper than 8+1 boards? I've never quite understood this. They always advertise with overclocking-stuff but it causes the board to catch fire in most cases when OCing a 6-core.

What kind of facilities does MSI have in Vegas?

I go to Vegas at least twice a year and would be interested in a tour
I like anything to to do with machines

So if I understand what you've said correctly MSIAlex, [attached picture] won't void my warranty as long as I return it with the original heatsink installed and have not caused damage resulting from the removal/installation processes?

For those with less imagination, I refer to installing an aftermarket heatsink. I just wanted an excuse to post that picture I was always unsure about MSI's warranty policy regarding aftermarket cooling.

Or is that just the range you guys give us for all overclocking in general?
The settings in Afterburner is based on items we sell. Whether it can handle additional voltage is unknown because no two electrical components will act 100% the same.

Also, how did you start snowboarding and how long have you done it for?
I recently came back from a week in Italy, skiing.

I'm going to Denver for the SIA show in a week, and will shred it up there.

How hard? If you can skateboard or surf, you can snowboard. Or, if you are willing to endure roughly 2 weekends of butthurt, you can snowboard.

Most people give up after day 1 b/c you're on your ass the entire time.

Thanks, and if you can't point me in the right direction, I understand!
Depends on how many cells and the type of battery... in general, I try to have at least a spare batter for my notebook so if I'm somewhere without a power supply, I can at least do work for some time before my laptop dies.

You can pull information off the battery itself to find out if there are any 3rd party batteries with more cell and higher WHr ratings.

After the basics, it is much easier to become very proficient at snowboarding than it is skiing. And yes, this is off topic.
Once you get over the first couple of days it's easy.

More or less, yes... but if you are running something way larger than what we provided, if it warps the PCB or damage is done from warpage, it voids warranty.

A support bracket is in use (not pictured) and the PCB is straight as an arrow I know the pitfalls of PCB bendage.

See? I can add a "-age" suffix to things too

I had to test this bad boy out, and replace the stock thermal paste. I understand that thermal paste application is not tended to like a baby bird, but I must say that the stock thermal paste application is atrocious

In case you're wondering, I was able to drop another ~15-20C off load temps at nearly inaudible sound levels The included memory/VRM heatsink made my life easier, too, as it helps increase rigidity and negates the need for additional heatsinks.

Regarding warranty, it's not about fine print, it's just to simplify the process and reduce abuse.

If we offer lifetime warranty, people abuse it, and then we have to tweak it to make sure it's still profitable to offer it... then it just adds layers and complexity to the end user.

I personally prefer simplicity: a set period of time for warranty coverage, NO BS no fine print about what qualifies and what doesn't.

As for 5870 Lightning: I don't have an answer. This was something before I joined marketing.

I loose too many receipts to buy anything other than MSI/Gigabyte/asus

Don't really like ASUS much, and Gigabyte blue PCB kinda annoys me.

The battery in my other car is dead, and I bought it from Kragen last September.

Because I have no receipt, even though the sticker on the battery clearly shows a manufacture date of 07/10 and even though that battery is clearly only sold by Kragen/Checker/O'Reilly, I have to now buy a new battery.

Fun times with receipts.
