Yeah that's my understanding of it. I've been searching that question for awhile too, and mostly everything I've found says you can do it, but you just need to have the same version.

It's a HP and the hard drive went out on it so i need to put a new hard drive in it, therefore no recovery partition.

And further reading into this, the HP key is a OEM key correct? So i need a OEM version of windows vista x64 and not just any retail disc?
