I7 970 or i7 975?

Thread Starter
I'm in the market to buy a new processor this week and am unsure which chip to buy as there both about the same price on eBay. Either the i7-970 or i7-975, I have a R3E and would like to reach 4.2ghz stable under water.

i7-970 hands down...

the i7-975 is only a 4 core processor and the i7-970 is a 6 core processor (apparently intel doesn't know how to count). The only advantage that the 975 has over the 970 is that it has an unlocked multiplier (usually for easier overclocking).

Basically get the 970

Not really playing much games, mostly use it for everyday work like running sites I own, graphic designing, Downloading/uploading, converting/burning movies and browsing the web.

If you need a chip right now then get the 970, its a 6-core processor. However I'd wait for ivy bridge (6, 8 and 12 core processors on the 22nm scale) which comes out in late Q2 or early Q3.

the 970 is a no brainer over the elder 975.

The Extremes get phased-out rather quickly.
