MSI GTX 580 Twin Frozr II vs Reference in SLI

Thread Starter
I see the new MSI GTX 580 Twin Frozr II card is coming out. I also belive a GTX 570 Lightning card.

My question is in SLI mode will running the open case cooling card run hotter than a closed reference case cooling with exhaust going out the back?

I hear that two SLI cards with open case cooling tends to run one of the cards much hotter. Could that be a possible problem with the GTX 580 and which do think would be better?

My small problem is my mobo configuration will have the two cards back to back without any space between the two of them.

Thanks for those who respond in advance.

With good airflow MSI should cool better.

The Twin Frozr II design will undoubtedly be a lot better temperature-wise whilst in SLi. The rig I am currently using has a Frozr 5850 in it and whilst gaming it never goes above 50C at 40% fan. I do not see why it would be any different whilst in SLi, they may be a little higher than a single-card setup (in fact, there's a high chance they will be), but it will most definitely be less of a gap than with reference design coolers.

Since the cards will be back-to-back, ensure you have a reasonably fast intake fan blowing into them perpendicularly. This will work wonders on the temperatures.

There may be a slightly larger temp differential between the cards running TFIII coolers, but overall the temps of both cards would probably be a bit lower. Most people seem pretty impressed w/the perf of the reference coolers on the 5xx-series though so I'm not sure it's worth much extra for TFIII version ... unlike you value the looks. I know I like how my copper TFII coolers look through the window thumb.gif

Looks like it runs quite a bit cooler than reference.

My reference ASUS GTX 580 easily peaks at around 80 degrees on full load.

Twin Frozr II is impressive, even if it's just a 20 degree drop, that is good enough for me to want to sell my ASUS cards and get the MSI one.
