[Miller-McCune]The Musician’s Brain

Limb and Margulis — a saxophonist and a pianist, respectively, who both segued into science — have just published separate studies of music and the brain. Margulis’ paper suggests that the intense training musicians receive literally changes the way their brains function. Limb’s work examines how jazz players get into a trance-like state of pure inventiveness as they improvise.

Ahh it feels good to be a musician lol

Everyone in my family was musical. Just didn't do it for a profession.

I remember in college they did a study about brain activity and stuff while listening to music. It was found that music helps increase brain activity/function.

I can believe it.

Greetz
I saw some brain documentary on PBS on which a scientist who is also a musician did a study mapping peoples' brain activity during various activities. At the highest scale, meaning most different parts engaged simoultaneously, was someone playing an instrument and singing. It makes sense when you think about it.

I always said I thought in a differant manner from those around me. Most of them weren't musicians. Played horn for 7 years and miss band dearly.

pretty good read.

it's been a standing conclusion for years that musical skills and the inherently unique thought process lends itself well to computers & programming.

thus, i am not surprised that most of us on OCN have had some experience as musicians (myself included - 7 yrs trumpet, 8 years drums, voice)

Now that would make for an interesting survey... about being skilled with both music and programming.

I realized a long time ago that my mind is wired different from many other people. This article was definitely an interesting read.

I started with piano, played trombone for 11 years from grade school through college, and also did a lot of singing...

It would be interesting to see how many more musicians we have on here.

After 28 hours per week professional singing for 4.5 years (ON TOP OF SCHOOL HOURS! ) I could well believe that my brain has been re-written lol.
That doesn't even take into consideration the hundreds of hours prior to those 4.5 years, or, the uncountable hours since!
