Stop my ISP from throttling?

So recently my ISP has improved my download speed, going from 6Mbit down to 15Mbit down, I thought this was awesome until I noticed SEVERE throttling at peak times. They drop my download speed down to 0.29Mbit. This is ridiculous for the usage my internet gets.

3 PC's on it at 0.29Mbit, lets convert that to Megabytes. 0.03 MB. So, for 3 PC's using the internet in this house we have 3KB/s to share to browse, to game, to shop and post on forums and the like.

I was trying to download UT3 on Steam a little while ago, toddling along at 1.5MB/S, drops to 200KB/s, then to 3KB/s, then it stopped.

This page took about 20 seconds to load.

Anyway, the question is: Does anyone know any good tactics/angles to approach my ISP to get them to 'remove their reigns' or at a minimum, calm it down a bit?

you cant really do anything about it, if you bug them though they will prioritise your connection especially if your on BT smile.gif

I will still contact them and tell them that you are not getting the speeds your paying for, and also if they are throttling your connection its not allowing you to access the internet, give them the old I am going to switch to your competitor too.

Yes, but it's not in my contract. My contract is for an unlimited useage connection.

Usually the throttling is only on the lower end packages.

ISP's are completely within their right to throttle you and advertised speeds are not guaranteed as i'm sure you'll know having read the small print. However, there comes a point (and there is no accurate figure) where you could claim that your connection is not fit for purpose. So if your line was capable of 8mb/s and you received 30kb/s download all day all night, then you could take up a complaint with the ISP and ultimately, small claims.

An unlimited package does not mean you avoid throttling, that is completely false.

Just curious, what type of ISP do you have? I am guessing cable, and from the times it looks like they are slowing in the evening, when everyone else is getting home from work and getting online, and this can affect your speeds.
Or they could be throttling you.

Peak hours my friend... Not a whole lot you can do about it.

It be that they are not throttling you at all. Their infrastructure may just be getting saturated during peak usage times.

Also, I can almost guarantee that if you read the fine print, your contract will state that the connection supports speeds up to *mb/s. Therefore you are not guaranteed your theoretical maximum speed all the time.

I See you're on BT

Good luck with that.

I used to get spikes in speed (mainly because there pipes are not enough for the customer base)

then i went with Plusnet

none of that trouble now

anyways

You're "unlimited" is actually 300GB per month it was 100GB last year but they soon changed it after allot of complaints.

cable or dsl? if its cable just change the mac on your router so you get a new dhcp lease with new ip that hopefully they aren't shaping.
