My boot time on a VelociRaptor is ~45 sec into Win 7 64. How is that drive config'd in BIOS and what drive is it?

Thanks bfe_vern. I have tested it over and over and it is the Hitachi 3TB drive that is causing the hang. On a fresh install of W7 64 bit it boots up in 46 sec. If I attach the 3TB drive it take 1 min and 30 sec. I checked in disk management and it is one partition of 2794 GB NTFS. I thought it was supposed to be GPT though.

because it is 3tb drive do you have to enable anything in the BIOS to overcome the
2.25tb limit or is it automatic.

I don't think there is anything to do in the BIOS because I can see the drive as one partition of 2794GB in W7 but it is NTFS and I have been reading it needs to be GPT format. I just asked this question in the hard drive forum.

I bought a new HD and am trying to use it as a data drive in W7 64 bit. I have it converted to GPT but to use it I have to format it and W7 will only format it in NTFS. What do I need to do to use this drive in GPT? Thanks, Kent

If that 3TB disk is empty, would you try formatting it into ntfs and partitioning it into 3 parts of 1TBs. Or is it already partitioned!

I could try partitioning it in 3 with NTFS. It is already partitioned but as 1. Right now I am trying the software gparted to see if that helps but I will try what you suggest a little later. Thanks.

OK I partitioned it into a 2TB and 746GB. The 756 partition is unallocated and I can't seem to do anything with it. But the 2TB NTFS partition is working properly and does not hang W7 boot. So for now I will use it as a 2TB drive. Thanks for the help.

On this page http://www.hitachigst.com/internal-d...eskstar-7k3000 if you see the PDF file called "High Capacity Tech Brief" it mentions on p.3 that you need the latest Microsoft Storage Drivers. Would these be included in W7 with updates or is this something you have to download separately.

According to this: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../cc725671.aspx

You need GPT for disks larger than 2TB. Below is from the link above.

To change a master boot record disk into a GUID partition table disk using the Windows interface
Back up or move the data on the basic master boot record (MBR) disk you want to convert into a GUID partition table (GPT) disk.

If the disk contains any partitions or volumes, right-click any volumes on the disk and then click Delete Partition or Delete Volume.

Right-click the MBR disk that you want to change into a GPT disk, and then click Convert to GPT Disk.

Thanks bfe_vern but that is as far as I get. I can change it to a GPT disk but then I can't use it because it says it needs to be formatted. When I go to format it, the only option is NTFS. I can't figure out how to format it for GPT.
