Fan control for the HD4870 gigabyte

Hey OCN, this is the deal,

I'm helping a friend with his new case to get it as quiet as mine but I've ran into a little obstacle. He's got a HD4870 gigabyte in his case, it was cheap and works nicely, but damn, it's loud like hell! He's got only GT's and NB's in his case so it's really, really noticeable.

This is the subject I'm talking about:

The cooler seems to be Zalman, which is fine, it works good, but it seems to run all the time @ 100% RPM, which is crazy right? I've tried to get it down with ccc overclock, didn't do a thing, and I've edited the profile file, didn't do anything either. Is there anyway to turn this blender down or i he doomed to get a third party cooler or a different card?

Cheers, J.

Alright, I've tried it.

I certainly showed that it slowed down in the graph and all, but it still sounds equally loud and there aren't any differences in temps, so I think it's not working either.

Is it possible that it just doesn't have any fan control?

is that the stock cooler or is that an aftermarket deal thats someone already put on? that picture shows it plugged into the fan header of the card so it should be working via software control, unless its ment to have a PWM controlled fan and that ones just a normal one that needs voltage control to change fan speeds (though my powercolor 4870 controls the stock fan via voltage not PWM, so you shouldbe fine there)

But if the coolers plugged straight powersupply or hooked up in a way that bypasses the cards "fan control" system (as above, the ATI reference fan might be PWM but gigabytes slapped a non PWM fan on designed to just run at 100% all the time?) then its got direct 100% power all the time regardless of what the GFX card fan speed is set at, you'll need to either hook it up to a fan controller or do like a molex voltage mod to drop the fan speed downside with a voltage mod is it'll always been at that speed, won't change speeds with GPU heat/etc

can we get pics of the actual card its self just so we know exactly how its hooked up?

The cooler on the picture is the stock cooler and the one my friend has got is plugged just like that, not directly into the power supply. I was also confused why it react on any software, this is why I made this topic, I was thinking that perhaps it just isn't possible to control? And if this is the case, I'll suggest a Thermalright Shaman for him, I've got one on my 5870 and it's awesomely quiet.
