Does my Vid Card need to be Upgraded...?

Thread Starter
I bought my signature rig about a year and a half ago, and at the time the 285 was the big green beast, and i was told it can run any game.

The only game i really play from time to time is wow, and it seems to run it maxed out.. although there is 'some' lag and sketchyness in big cities.. perhaps thats due to lag and not the vid card..

so my question is, would i notice a diff upgrading to a 470 or 580?

thanks!

The lag experienced in wow in big cities is server lag and has nothing to do with your pc. Theres really nothing you can do about it

Well your video-card will support many more games on high settings and probably 1920x1080 HD resolution ..

I have GTS 250 1 GB GIGABYTE OC Edition , and I can play every game on 1920x1080 resolution , usually all re highest settings .. And your card is better than mine , so no need to worry about getting a new video-card

If you want , you could get GTX 570 , it's much cheaper than GTX 580 , at benchmarks its behind GTX 580 , but very close to it , and in my opinion GTX 570 is best for money / performance right now Also has PhysX

i ran WOW maxed with no lag on a 9800 GT back in the day.... (1680x1050)

Somehow i don't think the graphics card is the issue here...

online game + lots of people = lag!

Keep the Old Green beast.

Wait for the GTX6** Cards to come out or wait for a GTX585 or GTX595 is they ever make them.

WoW and major cities drops your GPU usage alot and uses CPU more. Overclocking fixes this.

I gain 10-20 going from 2.6Ghz to 3.6Ghz on my old i7. Also alot of the higher settings are not optimized at all.

Going from a GTX 285 to a GTX 470 you won't see that much improvement. Maybe 20% at most.

The GTX 580 offers a 50% improvement over GTX 285 but you'll have to shell a hefty $500 for that.

Personally I prefer switching cards when I see a 100% improvement at least.

You'd be better off waiting.
The GTX 285 lacks DX11 but it's still a great card. The difference between the GTX 285 and GTX 470 can be as much as 20% in select games but I've actually seen results from certain games where the GTX 285 outperformed the GTX 470. It's your decision but, unless you really want DX11, I'd wait. If you just have to upgrade, go for a GTX 570 or better.
