So...now what?

Thread Starter

Got a CM Silent Pro 600 PSU from Newegg on 11/29/10. Installed and running by late December. Starts making boat engine fan noises like this:

...just outside the 30-day Newegg return timespan.

CM wants me to pay shipping (for this thing it's around $20-$30, probably more), which is just not worth it for their defective product. I have a 5 year warranty, so I might return it if I go to California within that amount of time

Any recommendations on what do do with this thing? The fan gets louder day by day, and I'd say it's a good 50-60dBa at this point. I probably will just get a new power supply, if anything, so does anyone have some good recs for a 600-700W PSU for around or under $100? HX650 is lookin good in that arena, and that's around the maximum I'll pay for a new PSU, maybe including rebate.

Heh, I might ship it back to them if and when I get that $20 rebate

Silent Pro reviews are nice, I just got a crappy fan.

It will fit in a USPS Priority Mail Large Flat Rate box. $14.95 for whatever you can fit in the box regardless of weight. It might even fit in a Medium Box, which is even cheaper to mail (just under $11). Add $0.70 for a tracking number.

Correct on it fitting, but I can't wait a couple weeks up to a month for an RMA either way. I won't spend money for a temp, just get a replacement, probably RMA this, and sell it. Problem is, any recs for replacements?

Gotcha.
Well, like the last person said, are you sticking to the setup in your sig or are you planning for any large upgrades?

just curious why you think shipping would be $20-30?

UPS store is right down the street, practically. That's all I've ever used, unfortunately.

Yes, I also do plan on upgrading, albeit significantly. This is probably going to end up with a GTX 560 or maybe 570, and possibly something else in the farther future. In all honesty, I was hoping for a PSU around 600-700 to be my last PSU to buy til' it fails, since I won't be doing huge GPU setups anytime soon.

Here are a few recommendations for you to consider:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817371021
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817207007
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817207002 (this one and the one above are the same -- the green one comes out a few bucks cheaper after the mail-in rebate and shipping)

I know the last two are out of your budget but I thought I'd bring them to your attention anyway since they're superior

Haha, I kinda like the motor boat sound, I'm sure it gets annoying after a long time though. Have you tried flipping the PSU over and running it with the fan on the bottom? Probably won't fix it but worth a try. Personally I would void the warranty and replace the fan but I would understand you not wanting to do that. As far as a replacement the ones that Shub linked are all really good, also consider Seasonic 520W S12II.

Tried flipping it over, nothing happenned. In fact, that's not my video, I'm just linking a similar problem. My PSU is fan-down in a CM692. Moving it around does not change the sound at all. It's the motor as far as I know. I'm specifically looking for something modular. The best I can consider is the HX650, plus rebate, but I'm wondering if I can find some good deals on good power supplies elsewhere, possible even here.
