HDD Noise

EDIT: As it turns out, my WD Caviar Black 500GB has suddenly decided to become louder. MUCH louder, even when outside of my case. Any ideas to quiet the darned thing down?

wiggle the wires that connect to your hdd? Something must be pushing or pulling on either the drive or drive cage to let it vibrate. Did you check to make sure it is screwed in tight? If it uses a tool-less system, toss a couple screws into it anyways.

It's a tool-less system that doesn't allow screws. Very frustrating. I have attempted to move the wires, use a different wire for each part, etc. I can't use any kind of rubber silencer either since the tool-less thing isn't long enough to support it.

If you put the hard drive into another slot does it still vibrate? Maybe you could try and put a strip of tape, like electrical tape along the sides, then cut holes out for where the screws would go, that might dampen it some, if it will still fit.

Well I had to leave, so I can't try anything now. If I remember correctly, there may be a spot to screw a hard disk in manually above the tool-less section, but my Radeon HD 5850 blocks it off if that is indeed what it is for.

I have tried moving it around, and all 5 slots vibrate. It's weird, because it used to be whisper quiet, impossible to hear unless you actually had your ear inside the case with the side panel off.

I was going to post about mine making a lot of noise sometimes too. Almost a grinding but not really. But a pretty aggressive vibrating noise. Is it just a caviar black thing?

No, I think it's a hard drive vibration thing. My CB is usually super quiet, as I have already stated above. It's not until I moved stuff around that it began to vibrate a lot. I'm going to try to screw it down and will get back to you to let you know if it persists.

EDIT: Wow, apparently caviar blacks just get really loud for no reason. This is unfortunate. I may have to get rid of it, and it's the drive with all my most important data.
