Windows cannot install to SSD in AHCI mode

Thread Starter
I'm having trouble installing Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on my Micro Center 64GB SSD (A-Data S599). When I go to install windows, I do custom installation and on the drive list, when I select my SSD it give me the following error:
Quote:
Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu.

I can create/delete partitions just fine (within the windows installation thing) but I just can't install on the SSD.

I've tried the following to no avail:
  • unplug all other drives (except usb dvd drive that I'm installing from)
  • move ssd to sata port 0
  • use AMD's AHCI driver
  • different sata cables
  • several ata secure erases
  • formatting ssd to ntfs before installation
  • updating bios

I also tried updating the firmware on my ssd using adata's firmware update utility but it didn't recognize the drive.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what I can do to get Windows to cooperate?

I had to navigate to a USB stick with the AMD driver on it when it asked for additional drivers. Besides, can't you just install in IDE mode then switch to AHCI afterward?

I'll try that out. Do you know if the performance would be the same (after switching to AHCI) as just using AHCI from the beginning?

I got Windows installed on the SSD in IDE mode, then I switched to AHCI mode (within Windows by changing a registry entry), then switched to AHCI mode in BIOS. But, BIOS doesn't see the SSD when it's in AHCI mode, so I can't boot to it. I'm not really sure where to go from here.

Edit: I was able to get the firmware update utility for the SSD to recognize the drive. Unfortunately, something went awry resulting in a bad flash. Going to Micro Center tomorrow for an exchange.

Got the drive exchanged for a new one today. BIOS recognized it immediately (in AHCI mode) and I'm installing Windows 7 to it right now. I guess it was just a bad disk.

It is scary how many bad SSDs I have seen already here on OCN. Sure there were probably some cases of noobish user errors, but I am sure that a lot of them weren't. They do seem to have a higher DOA rate than conventional HDDs, that is for sure.

And really glad it worked out for you. Good luck with it.
