Hyper 212+ bad installation?

Thread Starter
I just got CM hyper 212+ and put it on. I put AS5 in the grooves and scrapped off the excess, and put a dab on the cpu and screwed it down. My idle dropped from 35 to 30, and my load dropped from 67 to about 55. The load is good, but I've seen friends with this cooler whose idle had dropped like 15C. Did i do something wrong?

Idle temps really mean nothing, they really depend a lot on ambient temperatures. As for load a 12 degree drop isn't anything to be ashamed of. Make sure you have the cooler cinched down tightly and just give it time. AS has a curing time of up to 200 hours during which that time temps can actually decrease.

I originally had my Hyper 212+ slathered with AS5 as 'recommended' and its performance seemed lacking. So I cleaned it all off, which given all those grooves was a PITA, and used a very thin coat of OCZ Freeze over the top of the processor instead (which BTW is Cooler Master's recommended application for this cooler, if that really means anything). This was a decent improvement though not dramatic. My thoughts: if you read the AS5 documentation, they state that globs of AS5 sitting on your processor are a bad thing; you want as little as possible. And I imagine that those huges tracks of AS5 sitting in the grooves of the Hyper 212+ are just as bad in that regard. Anyways, my two cents worth...

Are you overclocking if so what settings... I used X method on my 212+ little X on cpu and seems to work well.. Right now using OCZ freeze no MX-2 left, there about same tbh.. My idles about 37-38c and loads around 56c with my cpu at 4.1ghz 1.46v..

AS5 takes awhile to get best results.

Globs of paste might be bad, but absence of any paste is probably worse. The idea of filling in the pipe tracks first is that if you don't, they end up absorbing a fair amount of paste and prevent the paste on the cpu from spreading.

The temps are fine... in fact they're even good. Boost it with an additional fan in a push pull combo and relax about messing too much with your seating. You could take a test look to see how the spread worked out and make adjustments if necessary- but you could do it worse next time... maybe better. Besides, like said above AS5 takes 200 hours to cure... So you won't get a real appreciation for how well you did until it does. Expect another 2-4 degree drop.

You have to lap the 212+ to get good performance out of it.

I dont recommend lapping a direct touch heat pipe heat sink. The copper pipes are not very thick and you could cause serious damage, also the hyper 212 is not flat on the bottom it was designed for the copper pipes to touch the cpu. Ive seen articled were people have had success just putting a small dab on each pipe and letting the weight of mounting it spread it.
