PCI-e OC 16x ,4x lanes over 100MHz ??

Hey folks, I've scourged this forum and more..

My build is in my sig.

Big question --- does all the PCIE OC'ing from the BIOS do is increasing the bandwidth for the cards???

2nd question --- over 16x ,the above, if true, is useless?? But on 4x will yeild superior results ??

I have a 6850 and plan to CFX a 6870 soon but am pondering whether a mobo upgrade will help-- That's some cash gone..

Officially the 785G chipset offers a PCIe 2.0 x16 slot, a PCIe 2.0 x4 slot, a total of 22 PCIe lanes -- I know that doesn't add up

Lastly, is a 16x 6870 4x 6850 cfx a good idea :?

Overclocking the PCI-e frequencies yields a very negligible yield, unless you're in it only for the numbers.

Lanes works in logical order; the larger the number, the better it is. 16x > 4x. No exceptions.

I don't know how the lanes work, yet.

You're better off using another motherboard with either 8x/8x or full 16x/16x.

prob cause the other 2 lanes on that chipset are used to connect the sata and ide or whatever ports you have including usb ports unless you have a SB that takes care of all of the other odd stuff.

And if you change the mhz of the bus over 100mhz it will effect everything that is connected to it which in the end makes for bad things to happen.

So in other words it has 2 physical x16 slots but one only goes to x4? is there no setting in bios to make it x8 x8? That would work great for you if there is.

i have the pcie overclocked to 150mhz since last march when i bought this board. i have noticed two things compared to stock pcie @100mhz:

1. with gpu it sems to be a bit more responsive, along with producing much more consistent fps with more graphically intense games (Crysis, Lost Planet 2, Metro 2033)

2. it seems to stabilize the cpu overclock as well @150 bc i can get cpu stable at higher speeds when pcie is overclocked from 100-150. @100 i get 3.2 occt stable for 12hrs.
@3.3 and 100mhz pcie i get reboot as os is loading. @3.3 and 125mhz pcie is stable for a bit longer, maybe 30-60 minutes of gaming and i get a bsod. @3.5 and 150mhz pcie, i am stable for 12hrs occt.

3. not sure about too much more other than ive always read that it shouldnt be above 108-110 max. also the amd pcie bandwith tool shows higher bandwith as well for both cpu-gpu and gpu-cpu.

LOL .. somethings up with OCN :/

Ok , to respond to all your replies..

1. I have an SB that takes care of the sata etc... I thought the GFX was connected to the cpu thru the NB , the SB is connected to the NB And the NB is connected to the CPU thru HT links
Now the PCI-e is DIRECTLY connected to the NB, there is NO interaction w/ the SATA, which is connected to the NB THRU THE SB :/
Does any one get it ???
Opening up AOD on the diagram page shows you this :\\

SO again, HOW does the PCIe interfere with the SATA??

2. I'm having an insane issue going from 3.8 -> 3.9GHz ( even from 1.4 to 1.55V) Despite good thermals. Could the PCI-e OC help ?? I'll try and get back l8tr. How did it bode with those of you who tried it ? kronik, hollyyy sh** I cannot imagine a 150 PCI-e .. that'll fry my wifi card >>

3. terraprime, well : I have an SB that takes care of my sata. The only things connected via pci/pcie are- my gfx card and an edimax wifi card

4.legoman , I plan to upgrade when bulldozer goes cheap, so on second thought, fail! I'll go with a bottleneck of sorts : my question remains : will OC'ing this clock help with the 4x lane bottleneck?? BTW, an extra card in a 4x slot has to account for SOMETHING???

16x/4x is a little slower than 16x/8x which is a little slower than 16x/16x. You'd be better off if the board allowed 8x/8x, but you'll only lose a bit if you put the weaker card in the 4x slot, around 4-6% of the xfire benefit.

You've had the PCI-E at 150mhz since last march!?!?!?

Isn't that epic/? makes me , and a ton of people look so stupid

Once I'm done stabilising my ram and everything, I'm gonna uncouple my raid and try to test for memory corruption with a raised PCIE --

THE ONE THIng I NEED HELP ON ;;;;

WILL OCING MY PCIE LANES FRY MY PCI WIFI CARD???

Really, ANY insight??
It's unlikely to fry the wifi card, however you will hit a limit very quickly where it becomes very unstable or fails to connect.
