Windows Activation Question

Thread Starter
I recently bought an OEM copy of Windows 7 Pro x64 from Newegg. I installed it using the Product Key but I did not activate it.

A couple days later I decided to build another computer and since I needed another copy of Windows, I figured joining TechNet would be the cheapest solution.

So, I uninstalled the copy of Windows 7 Pro OEM that I purchased - again, it was never activated.

My question is, if I were to sell that OEM copy of Windows, can be activated by the new buyer? I'm going to be frank and tell them it was opened, installed but was not activated. And I'll make sure they are aware of the limitations of an OEM version. Can I assure them that Activation will work for them?

My thinking is, entering the Product Key during installation just allowed the install process to complete. It didn't 'call home' to Microsoft and tie/lock that OEM copy to the MAC Address of my computer because it wasn't activated.

Do I have this straight? Will that disk and key be able to be Activated with Microsoft? I don't want to go through the hassle of selling it if it can't be legitimately activated. But I would like to recoup some of the $150 I spent with Newegg for the disk.

I've asked this same question in 2 other forums and I'm getting conflicting answers. Hopefully one of you guys will know for sure.

Thanks!

If you were connected to the internet and you typed in the key then there is a chance you have activated it.

But like you said, it might have not activated by itself.

The thing with OEMs is that you lock it to the motherboard with which it was activated for the first time.

But usually if you call up Microsoft and tell then you cannot activate, they will just reset the license for you.

I'm not sure if this is true but I think there was some complaints about MS going postal on reselling licenses/OEM software, something evil about consumers having no rights

If you never activated the Key it has not be "locked" to a system yet, so you can sell it.
Even if you entered it, so long as you did not connect to MS to activate it (there is an option to do it automatically during setup) then as far as MS knows, the key is still sitting in the sleeve unused.
