Without large publishers, many development studios would lack the necessary funds to continue. But are these publishers sacrificing creativity for the bottom line?

Very good read, I also despair at the state of the gaming industry, what's going to happen it 10-15 years the 30th cod installment? I hope this is just a momentary dip in the overall life span of gaming but sadly I think its here to stay.

Well, there are some firmly established formulas for good reason... they work. I personally enjoy FPS and RPG games, and some enjoy MMO or RTS. When games stray too far from that formula, for me, they become gimmicky and annoying in many cases.

That said, 2011 is looking absolutely amazing for PC gaming. We've got Bulletstorm, Homefront, Deus Ex, Brink, Witcher 2, TESV, and many, many more.

Here's a neat list, in case you're even remotely worried about the state of PC gaming in 2011:

the article is missing the entire indie games movement...

where is the mention of:
Minecraft (over 1 million sold...)
Amnesia
DefenseGrid (popularized tower defense)
Braid (artsy, time manipulator 2d platformer)
AI war (co-op grand strategy at its finest)

I could go on. Even Portal started off as an Indie project (or something - can't recall ) then Valve saw its potential

Maybe 2011 will be remembered as the year of Indie games.

edit: and yes i know there were some games on the above list that did not come out in 2010. just pointing out that good & successful games have come out of the indie scene

Not only that... but there are numerous AAA titles coming out in 2011... if Witcher II, TESV, and Guild Wars II were the only games coming out, I'd still be thrilled, but that's only the tip of the iceberg. IMO 2010 will pale in comparison compared to 2011 as far as PC games go.

for sure...

i was surprised to see Infinity: The Quest for Earth slated for 2011(from your list)... would be cool if it actually comes out this year

argh! i hate that list.. now there are more games i want, i don't even have enough time to play the ones i bought off steam in 2009, let alone my 2010 purchases. I am over a year behind

*with the exception of borderlands (purchased in august started playing boxing day)

Sometimes I wish I didn't have to work to eat, so that I could just go down that list one by one and play every game.

I agree, indie games are having more and more of an influence... the best parts is that the indie developers are once again putting pressure on large publishers to release quality products, instead of rehashed cookie-cutter 5 hour singleplayer campaigns with no story.

I have a broken link, but its very true.

But think about it this way. When a game like Black Ops can be released that is honestly just W@W v2 with a little MW mixed in, and sell Billions of dollars worth of games, why would they do anything different?
