I can't get my PII 965 pass 3.7ghz, lousy chip or am I doing it wrong?

Thread Starter
I have the voltage set at 1.45v (I think I could do lower, but I never bothered). I tried increasing the multiplier up to 19.5x and I get BSOD almost immediately with Intel Burn Test.

My NB voltage is set at 1.4 I believe.

RAM is at 1.65v.

I haven't messed around with all the other tweaks yet because I'm not sure what does what.

Temperature was about 55c after 20 runs at 3.7ghz and when I raise it to 3.9ghz, it does run long enough to see the temperature go up past 55c.

Anyone know what I'm doing wrong or whether it's just a lousy chip?

up the vcore to 1.50 - 1.55

try to keep temps below 55C at 4ghz, and 50C if your going higher.

I heard I shouldn't have my VCore higher than 1.5v.

I could not get my chip past 3.7ghz and I am sure your board is just a slighly update version of mine. If i remember the board just could not handle the extra voltage requied.

1.4 for your nb might be over doing it. From my experience, I dumped too much voltage into my cpunb and it actually caused instability in my case.

My 2 cents

Good luck,

lower every thing to stock
up v.core to 1.55v
up multi and ht clock to get the speed your after
lower ht speed back to/as close to 2000mhz with its multi
lower memory to close to stock
lower nb closer to 2000 mhz
save and reboot
no bsod? start lowering vcore till you get bsod and up it 2-3 notches

His is a different chipset 790gx as apposed to your 780.

1.5v is mostly required to go up and over 4Ghz. Your temps are already at the recommended max so i would stop right there just because your temps are too high. Any more voltage on your CPU will just make it worse and you will get instability once you go ever 55*C so until you bring your temps down i would not try anything more than what you already have. I'm pretty sure your board can handle 4Ghz though. I got 4.1 on a M4A785 so....

@Th0m0_202 : you want to boost the overall Performance so he should set his FSB to about 220 then go with multi from there on. Also for now, set your CPU/NB voltage to AUTO and then the speed to about 2400 - 2600mhz. agreed though to keep the HT link as close to 2000 as possible.
