Hmm do you need an i7 for a bigadv build?

Kinda looking for bang for the buck here, also (my electricity is included, poor managment company)

Lets say though that I want to just make a 3-4 card folding setup - would I save money (and get equivalent folding done) if was to add another card instead of spending $250 on a chip?

Well you can still get the cheaper hexa core. The Non BE 2.8 GHZ for ~$180

I think it would still out fold a $200 460 (I could be wrong)

What about a lower Sandy Bridge chip?

But even now I'm getting ahead of myself, in my mind I thought I would be able to get like a $100 chip and cheap mobo and throw some gpu's in there.....

Hmm

You do not need a hex-core for GPU folding! I'm folding on 2 460's with an old Athlon 64 5800+. Both are clocked around 900 core and get 12k+ PPD so no bottle neck there

Yeah I'm wondering what a nice bang for the buck-type set up would be, get some good points and not have to make it a comp I could game on...

You can go with a lot of GTS 450s, they are popular for farm use since they get about 10k ppd with only 100w and can be purchased for $80-120.

I'd still recommend going for an i7 setup for best bang for the buck.

Used i7 9xx $180-200
Used x58 $120-150
2GB DDR3 $20-30
Pick up a cheap psu from a mushkin sale and a decent heatsink and your done.

You can get 20-33k ppd from bigadv. If your budget is a bit bigger get a SB 2600k setup and go for 40k plus ppd.

CPU folding / bigadv - low power usage, slow updates
GPU farm - more power usage, fast updates
Hybrid CPU & GPU - mixture

You have to pick what you want. tongue.gif

Personally I would go for a i5 2500k bigadv, or i7 2600k if you got the money.
With a 5-$10 used GPU.

You can fold with that 260 with bigadv nicely. GPU2 doesnt murder bigadv ppd like gpu3 does.

It sounds like your not getting a 460 but just to inform you that there isn't a difference as folding is about shaders smile.gif
