Cementing my rig build/FT03 build thread

Thread Starter
With just 10 days between me and my college refund (plus a ton of Networking classes later) I have started to cement my build. It has been simply wild all the twists and turns the Tech industry makes which has led me to many "build" threads. I bring to you the SmartCube.

Silverstone FT03 case (because I can make puns all day while I'm bored) plus no one is going to steal a trashcan.

3x 23.6 1080P ASUS LED monitors (if the wife asks, its required for my programming class )

Asus P8P67 PRO m-ATX mobo because it seems to be the best m-ATX board offered currently

2x 6970's because I'm going to be broke for a long time and need this system to last me until I'm graduated

16GB of RAM because I use a nifty program called eBoostr and having 8-12GB of 16.3 GB/s RAM cache is faster than any SSD

$150~ in fans... I want the system to be cool since I'm going to be running Xfire in a small system with a highly clocked CPU. I'm going to use PWM splitters (+12VDC rail) with Delta slim 150CFM PWM fans plus 2x 80mm Silverstone fans in case I can't use the angled GPU fan on bottom. PWM lets me ramp up fan speed when needed and Xfire isn't going to be the quietest thing by itself.

H70 which I find to fit perfectly on the top exhaust in push/pull

Slim DVD slot because I need to burn CDs from time to time for school plus I have over 300 DVD+Rs from a Big Lots sale ($10 for 100!)

Blackwidow regular keyboard, the Ultimate one is more expensive without cause.

Mouse pad, greasy folding table vinyl desk surface is teh suckage

i7-2600K as compilers and VMs may use HT plus the few seconds here and there will save me hours over the machine's lifespan

HX850W PSU can't beat 5 year warranty with modular cable design. The Delta fans use a lot of watts plus I'm going to be using 3x HDDs. BD is 125ish watts so it's a little bit of futureproofing.

Creative Sigma Tactic3D headset, kind of pricey at $89 but may go with a $149 Logitech wireless headset.

TrackIR that I have to order somewhere else other than newegg as they don't have it. I plan on playing Arma2 plus head movement may be fun in my programming class as in input.

2x Samsung 2TB drives plus I have a 1TB I'm putting in my hotswap for downloads. If the RIAA shows up, its easy access to chuck the drive out the window into the neighbors lawn. My high school Network Admin had me questioned by the police for having "illegal software" on CD because he didn't know what SuSe Linux was

128GB C300 SSD I cringe to know that faster drives are right around the corner but it'd be a upgrade from my now two year old Kingston V 64GB drive (100MB/s to 300+MB/s double capacity)

Hawking 15DB panel suction cup mountable WiFi N USB adapter. I may be so poor in fact I may have to use someone's WiFi or I may enjoy taking it with me and my tablet to mount in the car. My wife takes forever inside stores..

Last but not least, a Cyberpower 900W UPS. It's almost spring and that means tornadoes/bad weather. No way I'm killing almost $4k in hardware due to a power surge. My first 4 computers died due to this and faulty house wiring, never again!

I will be posting a build thread with video/pics once I get my money. It's going to be a very fun build and thanks for sticking with me and my planned build threads.

I planned out Gskill Ripjaws X ram @ 1600 1.5V.

The corsair PSU is cheap @ 850W while being modular and carries a 7 year warranty.

6950s have lower memory bandwidth and doesn't overclock as well. The restocking fee will easily cover the cost of the 6970s if I cannot unlock stable and if AMD starts to laser cut dies as rumored (by the time I get my parts all may change).

Those monitors don't justify a $300 price hike over 3 monitors and they don't even have a VESA mounting option and the cable connection is terrible, right out the back.

With SB's multiplier O'Cing an expensive mobo isn't required for overclocking anymore. I should have no problem going up to 4.8GHZ and I retain two 8x PCIe slots for crossfire. I could see an extreme board being nice for Ivy Bridge but until I can get 6 memory slots again its not worth it IMO. I regard SB as a mainstream platform.

I'm only using an SSD as a cache device with eBoostr. Higher read speeds are important as I won't be writing to it and Micron makes their stuff in the US. Raid 0 Samsungs with daily backups to a 2tb hotswap should yield 300MB/s sustained reads with my RAM cache and SSD cache handling the smaller files. Installing a whole OS onto a SSD is wasteful IMO.

I'd rather have all around good adaptive speeds relative to what apps I use with 2TB of storage instead of complicated and wasteful management of which app gets installed on the SSD, which gets installed on the HDD. Installing Adobe CS5 on an SSD is nice but wasteful. I'd rather my comp automatically cache on my SSD and memory the files that are going to be used.

When reading from HDD+Cache it reads from all devices at once. I'd be loading the most used files off RAM @ 16.3GB/s, the smaller files off SSD @ 300MB/s, all while loading the big files off the HDD RAID @ 300MB/s in parallel. The only downside is OS boot in which it would be strictly HDD RAID only, once services are loaded it would be HDD+SSD and once the RAM cache gets filled (from HDD/SSD) it would be the trio in tandem. You could even force which programs are going to be cached so new installs of programs would be speedy instead of waiting for the prog to see that you are using it often to cache it for you.

I may even go with 4x 500GB hybrid SSDs in RAID so I have 16GB of hardware cache and do the whole SSD RAM cache thing on top of this to totally negate the HDD speed issue. As an added bonus since Linux caches RAM automatically I'd at least have 16GB of hardware cache and whatever ram I'm not using when dualbooting since Linux doesn't run eBoostr.

Overall in real world use my wait times are going to be much lower than just running off a SSD with the programs I'm using often while retaining a large amount of storage space.

what is your budget? i only see that you should wait for bulldozer / intel's replacement for x58. h70 is a bad cooler, silver arrow or nh-d14 easily beat it without breaking a sweat, better yet, get a custom watercooling setup. how about 570's? i heard its great for rendering, blu ray burner?, das keyboard?, hybrid ssd? (never heard of it), tbh with you, getting a lian li pc-a05/a04, mid/full tower would be better running that kind of hardware, i can see the two 6970's choking for air in that case.......will you be overclocking?

I have $3K USD optimum up to $4K USD maximum. This is for the whole system, everything.

If I go 2x 570s I can drop the MDP>DVI adapters ($50) and save some cash ($359 vs $379) plus the 570s should stay cooler being sandwiched together.

I'm going to drop the Razer Blackwidow since Razer seems to have quality issues. Thanks for reminding me of Das Keyboard, I'll pickup a Das Keyboard Model S Professional.

I already have a G9x I picked up last week for $40 for a mouse.

Hey since you are a Audiophile I picked up 2x Dell S320's for $5.75 at goodwill and have it hooked up to a 350W car AMP powered by a old IBM brick. It isn't too bad for $5.

I'll look for another cooler.

Ah! http://www.frozencpu.com/products/12...l?tl=g30#blank

This would mount on the side perfectly! Man, your helping me spend some major money now lol

Those rads mounted to the side of a case arent going to be light... I know for a fact that the magicool 480 weighs a ton... (ask duckieho) the 720 has to be leaning tower status.

plus the deltas are beyond overkill and loud..... pick a low FPI thicker rad like the RX series xpsc and get gentletyphoons... also get a better pump like a 655 vario and get a res top for it. You need a decent pump if you going to have two rads and gpu blocks in the loop... or you can opt for 2 loops.

The thing I like about the rad is it's a single rad and fits perfectly. I do agree the deltas are overkill so I'll check out the gentle typhoons, PWM would be nice.

I was checking out the Aquastream XT

Is it any good?
