if youre into high-end equipment, mcintosh, lexicon, B&W, Nakamichi, tubeamps, etc, I would check out Audiogon.com for buying second-hand and researching.

Audioholics is another informative site.

Me personally, im too cheap, always used integrated setups. My all time favorite 'simple' setup for listening to stereo music is a Nakamichi Ai-1z or AV-1s receiver pushing 2 floor standing Vienna Acoustics grand concerts. Im content.

With a $1200 limit, there is a ton you can do! Don't limit yourself to being fed specific setups, I think its important to get acquainted with what it is you need to know and then make the decisions for yourself.

First off, do you have the space for floorstanding speakers? Or are you going to need bookshelf speakers. Remember, just because you can fit floorstandings into your listening space doesn't mean it is wise to do so. Floorstandings are usually meant for long to mid range listening. So, if you're sitting at a desk then its not wise because your proximity will limit the soundstage you're able to perceive.
However, you said you're going to be using them for the living room, so that shouldn't be too much a problem. Still, it is important to clarify.

Next, what is your source going to be? Are you hooking this up to your tv, your computer, cd player, vinyl player etc.

Lastly, what are you sound preferences? Do you want big thundering bass for movies? If that is the case, you'll want to focus a good portion of your funds on a subwoofer. If you are simply doing this for music listening, many floortanding speakers will allow you to get away without a subwoofer at all and you can focus more of your money on speakers.

And to get slightly more in depth, what kind of sound signature do you prefer? There are two ends of the spectrum really. Warm, rich, smooth would be one end, whereas detailed, accurate, precise would be the other end. In the middle of the spectrum is total transparancy, which you can find in studio monitors and such.
Someone who likes an accurate and detailed sound will describe the opposite end as being too laid back, or veiled. Someone who likes it to be warm and rich would describe their respective opposite end of the spectrum as being cold and harsh.

These are all important factors when spending $1200 on a speaker setup. Once you have those decided you can move on to deciding what kinds of components to include in your system. Then it'll be much easier to decide on your exactly which models you want.
