How much power to put through my AD700's?

Thread Starter
Just as my title says, how much? I know the box says something like 32ohms, but I was wondering if I could put 64-300ohms through my AD700's and not worry about it dying in a couple months. I have an Xonar ST and the options I have for my AMP are <64ohms, 64-300ohms, and 300-600ohms. Anyone have any experience with pumping more power through these?

EDIT: Just realized this is in the wrong section, if a mod could move this it would be awesome.

First of all, you do not "put ...ohms through" a circuit. An Ohm is a unit of resistance. For a given voltage, the higher the resistance (higher the Ohms), the LESS power dissipated by the resistor.

Your Xonar options are 64 Ohms and lower, 64-300 Ohms, etc. Since your load impedance is 32 Ohms (your headset), you want the drive impedance to be as close to that as possible for best performance. Therefore, you should choose the <64 Ohm option. If you choose any of the other options, you will not damage your headset, but you will have reduced output (lower volume).

Just FYI...
current goes through...
voltage is across...
power is dissipated by...

Well, that maybe so, but I know for a fact that my music gets louder when I increase the ohms. But I guess I'll leave it a lone.

That's because headphones with higher ohm ratings need more current, if you raise the setting on your soundcard to a higher ohm then all it is doing is providing more current - any headphone will get louder when fed with more current.

I own the ATH-A700s and I'm always hopping back and forth between both options, due to the impedance being 64 exactly.

I have the Essence and find the impedance bump only increases volume, I don't sense any improvement in sound so why bother? Just turn the volume up if you want it louder instead of risking the headphones.
