720p is a hair over .9mp, and augmented reality apps have done fine with that so far. 1mp still allows for a 720p camera, and if it is in fact the iPod touch camera, then that also allows for 720p video (ironically, the video has a higher resolution than the stills, at 1280*720 vs 960*720).

On a 960x640 or 480x320 screen yes, but if the iPad has a 2048x1536 screen it'll need a bit higher.

Maybe for a nicer picture for the user, but not for the app. Still not convinced about the Retina display though.

Heck, from the source:

What about software? We have already unearthed a couple icons pointing to cameras in Apple’s next iPad, and these icons also happen to hint at the lack of a screen resolution in change in the iPad 2.
Despite the bad grammer, it looks like there is still some contention about that. Will be interesting.

Phh. The day Apple does something innovative will be the day they get sold.

It'll need to produce images which are at least 2048x1536 in size on a retina display or at least 1024x768 on the current display.

It's interesting, it's possible it won't but I'm really thinking it will; I'm excited!

I think it all lines up, A5 capable of 1080p playback, SGX543MP2 being roughly 4x the performance than the SGX535 (drivers found in iOS 4.3 Beta), the engadget rumour/sighting about the retina display, the 2x sized images in the iBooks app, the so called LCD for iPad 2 showing up online for sale, etc.

I just hope it all turns out like that because I really want an iPad with a retina display -- gaming would be awesome (I.E, Infinity Blade)! As would web browsing, etc.

Having a screen with that high resolution shouldn't increase power consumption by much, if at all, seeing that it's primarily the LED-backlight which uses most of the power, and that increases with size of the display and not resolution.

They could just upsize it. Heck, they will have to no matter what. 2048*1536 is >1080p

Should be interesting. As for power, the only thing that would increase the power is the GPU will have to work that much harder to render 4x the pixels, especially games.

But they'll look much much better if they are native resolution, being upscaled doesn't make use of the screen. For video though, yes 1080p will simply be stretched (but still look brilliant).

Well, the SGX543 should use no more power than the SGX535 whilst performing much better (~2x). So, Apple would need two of them. If they are more power efficient than the SGX535 two may not use too much more power.

Eh, no real way to tell for another...3 months?

Also, something I've been wondering, though somewhat unrelated. You think the iPad two will get iOS 5 when it's available for all the small devices as well, or will they have the same 3.x->4.x delay again.

I think in maybe a month or two it'll be announced and you can pre-order, but that's usually pretty close to release; at most release should be no more than three months though.

I'm sure they'll both get iOS 5 at the same time, the first time was because they simply didn't have iOS 4 ready (not even for iPhone at the time). iOS 5 should be developed for iPhone and iPad at the same time.
