1100T Overclock - Stability problems @ 3.8ghz

Hi everyone,

This is my first post here, I've been lurking around lately trying to study up on some overclocking pointers, but I seem to have hit a major wall that I simply cannot get around. Thank you in advance for any and all input you have regarding this issue, it is greatly appreciated.

I recently built a brand new computer, and this is my first overclock attempt ever. Here are my specs:

AMD Phenom II X6 1100T BE (Stock heatsink)
ASUS M4A87TD EVO
Radeon HD 6950 (Shaders unlocked only, stock everything else)
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB DDR3 1600 F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL
Seagate 500GB Sata 3.0 HDD

I am using decent air cooling, so I thought 3.8ghz would be a good place to test the waters. My best attempts are stable enough to the point where gaming runs great (Crysis max settings for a few hours no issues, etc.), but the overclock buckles under crappy Flash games on Facebook. My wife plays this stuff a lot, and Flash repeatedly crashes into a BSOD. Stock settings seems to be gravy train, we haven't been able to crash Flash.

I've tried several BIOS settings with this OC, some were more stable where the flash plugin would only crash, but eventually we would get the BSOD if we kept trying the flash games. My most stable settings:

Turbo Core, Cool n Quiet and C1E disabled
CPU Multiplier @ x19 - 3.8ghz
Ram speed: 1333 w/ default timings and voltage 9-9-9-24, 1.5v
Bus speed: 200mhz
PCIe: 100
HT Link: Auto (CPUZ says 2000mhz)
NB: 2400mhz
CPU voltage: 1.375 (Also tried Auto voltage which went up to 1.452v at max load)
CPU-NB voltage: 1.25v (Also tried Auto voltage, 1.3v and 1.35v. 1.3v and higher gives RED text, is that bad?)
HT Voltage: Auto
NB Voltage: Auto
Load Line Calibration for CPU and CPU-NB: On

I have some concerns about heat with these settings as well. Prime95 blend test can push the CPU Temp to 60c max after the initial 7 tests, but stay stable. The next set of tests can go up to 63c before I shut it off in fear of CPU damage. Hard gaming and the facebook games never pushed CPU Temp beyond 47c, but I don't know how safe this OC would be in the long run if I do get it stable. Any ideas?

If you guys need any more info I'll be sure to answer my best, I don't have access to the PC right now but I will in a few hours.

Hi and welcome, first off fill in your system spec secondly the main problem is your using the stock cooler and thats not good for overclocking. I have my overclock set at 3.8, I could go higher I've had it at 4.0 but not stable with my cooler. I am considering a custom water cooling set up because I know these chips have potential but they like the cold so much. Keep your overclock at around 3.6 with 1.4v test using prime95 if its stable after an hour you would be considered quiet stable, 3hrs for good stability.

Just because your temps are okay doesn't mean you are stable, I've experienced shut downs and weird behaviour with an unstable overclock. Make sure you are prime95 stable and you are good to go. Also get better cooling:thumb:

First of all, set your memory correctly. Set the memory multiplier to x8 for 1600Mhz, and set the timings MANUALLY to 9-9-9-24 (or otherwise they'll end up something outrageous such as 9-11-11 or 11-11-11).

With stock cooling you really shouldn't ever be overclocking that far.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate it. I'll leave it at stock and get some better cooling options in the future and go from there.

Hey! I just finished my 1100T On MSI 890FXA GD65 motherboard.
It has 16 GB Komputerbay PC3 16000 RAM (Stock timings atm)
I was wondering about those timings. As soon as I get in the bios again, I will list my 4.21 Ghz O.C. settings.

Same as everyone else, need better cooling.

Here is a thread I started a while back, I'm also new to overclocking and I have mine stable at 4.0 and has been for a while.

http://www.overclock.net/amd-cpus/993393-amd-phenomii-x6-1100t-oc-past.html

It's kind of a jumbled mess now since I edited some things but you can get an idea of what I did.

Welcome to the shoes I was in a few weeks ago. You are not even stable at your current OC with a stock cooler. I too had it up at like 3.7ghz and in under 2 minutes of LinX testing 6gigs of memory I would have to shut it down as I was passing 62c+. That was with a aftermarket cooler too!

So I had to break out the big gun's the Noctua NH-D14 changed my OC'ing way's completely. I'm at 4ghz EASY when it comes to temperature, now the question is the voltage's for stability.

My CPU Voltage is 1.5 when under stress test, Offset so less when not.
NB Voltage 1.25, but I too am curious as to the bios showing red for the amount added. It's been recommended to me to get that CPU/NB Voltage up to 1.3-1.35 but I appear to be fairly stable at 1.25v but it's an ongoing process.

As for NB Frequency I'm rollin 2800mhz and all is well thus far. I've only been at 4ghz for a few day's though.

B-Roll's thread helped me during the process too ^^^
