[Kotaku] A Nintendo Argument Against Achievements - Page 2

I agree with Nintendo. Achievements create a distraction from the real game. I have to play a game first in my own way before I go about trying to search every nook and cranny of a map to find some stupid object needed for achievements.

The problem is, you won't be able to do it. So... yeah.
N64: Goldeneye, KGJ: Homerun Durby, Mario 64, Paper Mario, Mario Party, Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Zelda: Majora's Mask, Konker's Bad Fur Day, South Park, Perfect Dark

GC: Metroid Prime, Metroid Prime 2, Resident Evil 4, Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes, Zelda: Windwaker, Zelda: Twilight Princess, Super Smash Bros Melee, Luigi's Mansion, Eternal Darkness, Ikaruga

I don't own a Wii so I can't name 10 that I've actually played. But there ya go. I could name more for the 64 and GC but you only wanted 10. Go back to playing your cookie-cutter first person shooters kid.

Achievements are just extra tidbits for people to play for. It's a replay value thing. I know that "replay value" isn't in Nintendo's dictionary these days, but that doesn't mean others don't enjoy it.

Ok, South Park, Metroid Prime 1 and 2, MGS Twin Snakes are NOT good games. Far from it.

However, Goldeneye, Mario 64, Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and Resident Evil 4 were Phenomenal.

The rest were mediocre, at best.
And I'm 29, hardly a kid, and probably been gaming longer than you've been alive. But that's okay.

ive never cared about achievements.

most of the time they are given for stupid things, and arent really you "achieving" anything.

Achievements are a substitute for game content. They trick you into playing a short and rather easy game over and over so you get the illusion of "replay" value.

ruins any kind of credibility you ever had in the first place.

seriously, "good" is not defined by whether you, xnine, like it or not. sure, you may not have liked metroid. whatever. no-one cares. i hated unreal tournament, does that make it a bad game?

Deal.

Really? Ever play Metroid? Super Metroid? Metroid Prime 1 and 2 were a slap in the face to those two games.

Twin Snakes... Really? It is, without a doubt, the WORST Metal Gear Solid game ever. The cinemas were over the top, which is saying a lot because the cinema's in the original MGS were over the top. And these were far worse. The Controls were horrendous.

Nintendo is right. Achievements are wack. Gaming was perfectly fine for 30 years without achievements.

Who played CS 1.6 for achievements back in the day? That's right. The only things that mattered were frags and team victories.

Some would say a person your age is too old to be playing video games. Your blanket statement about being too cool for kiddy games is ironic.

Why does everyone think if kids can play a video game, it must be exclusive to them? Do you not realize that a huge percentage (probably a majority) of people who play CoD/Halo/BF are also under 18 (and lots are under 13 as well)? Just because a game looks cartoony does not make it a bad game...it's like people who hate on animated movies (Toy Story, for example) and like movies like Transformers too because Toy Story is "for kids."

OT: It's kind of surprising to me that Nintendo isn't using achievements just because of how much more they make people want to play. It's game theory and is the same idea behind levels, experiences points, etc. People like a sense of accomplishment, even if the accomplishment is completely meaningless. It certainly doesn't really detract from the game experience to leave out achievements though.
