When I started gaming in the early 90's (only 25 here), achievements didn't exist, but I still had tons of fun playing games with my friends. Now here we are 20 years later and achievements are in nearly everything. To be perfectly honest, I don't care one way or another, however, I get entertainment from getting them. I don't really go out of my way to get them (only in very rare cases, like Crackdown 1 on 360, very satisfying to get every achievement in that), but getting them adds to the fun I get from games.

A game not having achievements doesn't detract from it's value at all, hell, I still boot up quake 3 from time to time just for some old school fun.

Achievements haven't ruined games, and anyone who thinks they have, takes gaming far too seriously. You don't HAVE to get achievements, you can still just play through the game like you would if it didn't have them, so I don't see why you're even arguing. The fact that you're getting upset over something secondary added to a game is disheartening for an example of gamers.

Look at any game out with achievements right now, and tell me with 100% honesty and certainty that the achievements 'ruin' the game. You can't, simply because in no way do achievements detract from a game. You honestly think that if achievements had never been created, the game would be better? I see the argument that its a shallow attempt at replay value from the dev's... Well guess what, without them, there IS no replay value. The dev's made a crappy game with OR without achievements, your argument is invalid. The only people who will use the achievements as an excuse for replaying a crappy game or even playing it in the first place, are the achievement whores. You want an example? go look at all the people who played Avatar: The Last Airbender: The Burning Earth just to pad their overall score. (You can get all 1000 points in 5 minutes, not joking). I'd like to think those aren't the people that achievements were designed for, they just happen to an unfortunate population of the species we call gamers.

We can just stop arguing because we'll never agree on this issue. Ever. You think achievements are pointless... I like to think of them as little indicators for things you would normally brag to your friends about. Think back to a game you played as a kid, you did something amazing, or beat a very hard game, so you ran to your friends and said "Hey guys, I just beat x game!" and they all looked at you with skepticism and made you try and prove it. Well guess what, now you have proof of such accomplishments, whether or not you choose to use them as such is up to you. And yes, beating a game IS an achievement, with or without a little thing popping up to say so.

In this day and age they exist and will for quite a long time, so live with it, and ****. You like them? Great, do what you will with them. You don't like them? Just **** then and play the game they way you want to, and the way you were going to anyway. Achievements don't take anything away from you, so stop whining.
