I contest this heavily.
The N64 was incredible. Not to mention its usually Nintendo who come up with the next paradigm in console gaming.
Digital joystick? Nintendo.
Rumble? Nintendo.
Practical Handheld Console? Nintendo.
Motion Control? Nintendo.

Achievements are just extra tidbits for people to play for. It's a replay value thing. I know that "replay value" isn't in Nintendo's dictionary these days, but that doesn't mean others don't enjoy it.
Just pointing out the Ad Hominem here.

Oh, and i've always disliked achievements, i always saw them as a form to make mentally weak players get a bigger (and invisible) e-peen.
I like when achievements are built into the context of the game. For example, in Zelda: Wind Waker, I felt like it was a huge achievement to complete the entire map of the world, with every individual island mapped out. I didn't need a reward that said "congrats! you filled out the entire map!" because I had the map itself. Or, the killing all the golden skulltullas in Zelda: OoT. It was a part of the game that had tangible effects -- you didn't need some ribbon telling you what you'd achieved.

Do you know what achievements are? You seem very confused, here's the OP link in case you missed it the first time around.

Did you know "beating a game" means the game is over and is part of the game and not a achievement?

Some one's been dumbed down from playing too many achievements.

Oh, and can you kindly bold that part where I said "beating a game is dumb"? Oh? you can't because you made it up along with personal attacks to deflect you're own ignorance on the subject.
Sounds like someone is taking it personally. Thats what you get for insulting others - no one but yourself to blame.

Apparently YOU are not the ones who are aware of what achievements are. You also are not aware of what you say yourself.

Achievements ARE beating a game. Can anyone say obvious? So therefore - you're saying people who beat games are dumb. Logic. A implies B. B implies C therefore A implies C. Simple stuff here.

You really should read the OP. Please, go read and come back.

What Nintendo is saying is that achievements are becoming the core part of the game and is it necessary and that's what we're discussing on this thread btw, if you haven't noticed.
EXACTLY!
nintendo is saying that achievements are becoming a core part of the game. Untrue. They aren't. They aren't necessary either.

Lookup the word optional for yourself. Necessary things are not optional.

The only thing necessary about achievements is that Sony and Microsoft require them with every game. The developers dont have a choice - hence why EVERY game has one. Thats the requirement. Whether you care or not is up to the player - aka not required.

So what you're on about: me not knowing what the OP is about and what not - shows you have no idea what you're even saying right now. You're just raging because I got defensive yet you're the one who was talking garbage. Your babbling doesnt even make sense. Everything Ive said has been about the OP derrrrrp.

^This.

If you can name 10 games individually on the N64, GC, and Wii each, that were phenomenal, I'll retract what I've said.

The problem is, you won't be able to do it. So... yeah.
n64: ocarina of time, majoras mask, star fox 64, jet force gemini, turok 2 seeds of evil, paper mario, banjo kazooie, banjo tooie, mario kart 64, f-zero x, donkey kong 64, goldeneye 007, kirby 64, rogue squadron, super mario 64, smash bros

gamecube: twilight princess, windwaker, mario sunshine, starfox assault, timesplitters 2, rogue leader, rebel strike, f-zero gx, viewtiful joe, fire emblem path of radiance, ikaruga, luigis mansion, metroid prime, metroid prime 2, resident evil 1, 2, 3, 4, zero, sonic adventure 1 and 2, soul calibur 2, starfox adventures, smash bros melee, mario kart double dash

wii: no more heroes, no more heroes 2, goldeneye 007, kirbys epic yarn, epic mickey, donkey kong country returns, mario kart wii, smash brothers brawl, endless ocean 1 and 2, the conduit 1 and 2, arc rise fantasia, valhalla knights, monster hunter tri, metroid prime 3, metroid other m, fire emblem radiant dawn, super mario galaxy 1, super mario galaxy 2

i mean there are many more games i can list, but you're pretty much acting out of bias. whether or not you think that the aforementioned consoles are good is out of the question, because you pose the statement "name 10 games each respectively that were phenomenal", of course fans of the systems will name the developers staple and the most popular and the best games. obviously you're trolling and would be playing dumb not to expect that kind of reaction. what sense would it make if i hated the ps3 and told you to name 10 of the best games? name whatever 10 games you want, id most likely just says "oh those are just rehashed or sequels of already milked out franchises."

I'm with you there, and I prefer that to having a list of arbitrary, repetitive, and sometimes tedious things to do. Though to give it the benefit of the doubt, that usually only applies to the high achievements that people would likely do last.

Achievements as they are now are optional, as said before, and for a lot of people, can add to the longevity of the game. It keeps people playing and makes the game worth every penny. Is it not a good thing that people squeeze every last bit of enjoyment out of the game before it's shelved? Who cares if people like it? Let them enjoy it.

Yeah -- my point isn't that achievements shouldn't be in games. I'm just saying that I personally am not a huge fan.

Troll more please? Anyways, I view achievements as an added perk to the game at hand. In games such as Super Meat Boy for example, you're not forced to do them but its something added to the game that gives you a sense of accomplishment. Sort of like those games that open up an extra difficulty level when you beat the game and have all kinds of cool Easter eggs (MGS comes to mind). It just adds spice to the game.
