While I get what you mean by Sony (they try to lol) How is Apple? They let random people develop apps for iOS for free, and if Apple approves it it's on the app store.

Nintendo would never do that.

I can't say I read through every post as most of it is senseless banter as usual, but has anyone mentioned the fact that Nintendo does not have the same target audience as the PS3 or Xbox360?

Isn't Nintendo the "family" console geared towards in house multiplayer and a generally younger audience?

As for the achievement debate, in my opinion they are only there to give players a reason to replay the game and sink more time into it. Instead of you reaching the end of the game and thinking "What now?", you have achievements to tell you what to do next.

Ok few points here.

I agree with nintendo...about useless achievements. It's not really adding anything. Now what is a useless achievement? Lets take call of duty for example. It was an actual achievement to get every piece of enemy intel. What does that add to the gameplay? JACK AND SQUAT! And activision decided to make Jack a DLC so I just got SQUAT.

There was absolutely NO REASON other than the achievement to get all the intel. Now achivements that actually award something other than a few points (which I agree, people treat those like folding points or rep) and a shiny new ribbon, are actually worth a damn.

I loved making my own achievements. lets look at a CLASSIC game that had no achievements but was one of the best selling games of all time Final Fantasy 7. I knew that game, up down, left right, front to back, and everything between. I knew EVERY mob, every hit point and even some of the formulas used in the game that I could exploit and why.

I did EVERYTHING in that game. It was an achievement to buy a lifetime pass to the gold saucer on the first trip. It was an achievement to get every character's (including aeris) ultimate weapon and level 4 limit break. It was an achievement to beat ruby and emerald weapon legitimately. It was an achievement to beat the game in less than 24 hours.

Now then, all of these goals legitimately added to the gameplay.

I believe where the gaming community has lost their mind is the difference between goal and achievement. Achievements should be part of gameplay that coincides with goals but it shouldn't be a goal to get achievements.

Developers need to design a game that makes players WANT to get certain goals and achievements done for something more than a shiny badge. If your throwing stupid crap like finding all the intel that adds absolutely nothing to gameplay then that's faking replay value just to get 100% completetion BUT if your adding achievements like beat this uber hard optional boss and get soemthing cool out of it, it directly effects gameplay and adds to the player making the player more willing to do it for something other than a shiny ribbon and a few points.

Sorry microsoft. I don't need a few virtual awards and a few numbers next to my name to tell me how experienced I am when it comes to video games.

I don't know about the newer games, but when you collected all Intel in Call of Duty 4, you unlocked cheats too.

I see your point though and yes defeating FF7 Ruby and Emerald weapon's were some of the greatest video game achievements ever, without them being an "achievement".

I agree achievements, for the most part are retarded... but I just can't stop completing them...
Achievements are WIN, for the simple reason they provide an enourmous amount of (re)playability after having completed the game without focus on achievements, rather the game itself.

Achievements don't tell you how to play. If you wish to persue them they do. But then tell me, what Quest doesn't tell you what to do if you want to persue its reward?

An achievement is nothing but a non-mandatory Quest without the fluff around the task to be done.

Any ageist statement regarding gaming is absolute crap, anyone of any age can have fun on a game, be it a kiddie game or one respective to their age.
A game is for personal fun and enjoyment, 20's, 30's, 50's, 70, hell if it's fun and enjoyment for said person at whatever age, who has the right to take that away with comments like that?

Life is short, people should be able to do what they like in their recreational time, 'cos one day, any day, they won't be able to.

My Grandad's in his 70's and he loved San Andreas a few years back, it creased him up. I thought it was great seeing him play a game.

I've been wanting to say that since I saw that last night, but the missus had good reason to get me off my phone, soo....

I just want achievements to be simple like they were meant to be, Not like WoW's go to the 2009 brewfest... You cant change back time and redo that.

But i would like more of do the game, Do the game again, and again, Kill 9001 AI and no online achievements
Just as a little medal that you can show off and people would know you either like that game and how far you progressed, And possible deletion of the game if you cba to complete it all.

Achievements without a numerical value are worthless to me. I don't bother at all. So that rules out all Steam Achievements, even though people always cite them as an awesome feature of Steam.

For instance, on the 360, when I actually played mine, each game has 1000GS achievements. I'd finish the game, then go back and try to get all the none-MP achievements (I thought ALL achievements should be singleplayer only because I despised the MP of most games)

It adds replay value to the games, but I very, very rarely try for them anymore.

i mean there are many more games i can list, but you're pretty much acting out of bias. whether or not you think that the aforementioned consoles are good is out of the question, because you pose the statement "name 10 games each respectively that were phenomenal", of course fans of the systems will name the developers staple and the most popular and the best games. obviously you're trolling and would be playing dumb not to expect that kind of reaction. what sense would it make if i hated the ps3 and told you to name 10 of the best games? name whatever 10 games you want, id most likely just says "oh those are just rehashed or sequels of already milked out franchises."

Wow, that's a long quote. I've bolded the ones that I can completely agree with, whether it was a concept of originality, or all around just a great game.

And, yes, I can admit when I'm wrong. So I've retracted my statement as promised. And it wasn't an attempt at trolling, just perhaps a little emotional about Nintendo leaving lots of us in the dust. As a kid there was nothing better than finally getting a NES...

Yet, I still feel let down by Nintendo. That won't change. Hell, I remember when the NES came out. There were SO many good games for it, and the SNES as well. They screwed the pooch though with the N64, though. Oh, and why has no one mentioned Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire? That game was superb.
