performance loss of X1 slot?

I have been wondering, I know you can mod a PCI-E x1 slot to accept and X16 card, and you are going to lose bandwidth. So my question is how much performance will you lose for minor gaming and photoshop type programs.

What would be the best x16 card you could install before x1 would bottleneck the card?

GT 240 or HD 4670 equivelent.

Because I still want power, and if an x1 slot can support a much more powerful card then an ion graphics card, then why not just mod it and use an x16 card.

I have looked at the x1 cards, and they are just so underpowered.
I think they don't want to sell x1 cards that will max out an x1 slot so that people with crappy motherboards without x16 slots have to upgrade.

thanks for the thought though.

What motherboard is this?

ITX? The Ion is more than enough for basic stuff, it plays 1080p blu ray fine.

On that topic, would it be possible to mod a GTS 450 to run in a x1 slot and not have a massive PPD loss? This would be strictly for F@H, no gaming or multimedia.

The Ion would be more for a really lower-power HTPC or a case that just can't accept anything else. Mod a 4670, they run cool to begin with

Interested in this as well. Could stick another GPU in my rig to fold on. Does fah need a lot of bandwidth?

This is just for a friend who has a decent basic gaming rig, minus the video card, and is short on money, it is a dell desktop. So modding the slot and getting something like the gts250 would be enough to play games like left 4 dead 2 and such. mainly RTS and such.

it is a dell E510, but it is the model without the x16 slot. So it has a pretty decent cpu that would game pretty good with a good video card.

I know for folding you can run x1 no problem.

You can try and mod it if you want, don't you just cut the back with something and try not to cut into the motherboard?
