Ubuntu Installation

Thread Starter
Greetings, OCN.

Today I thought I'd experiment with Ubuntu as a learning experience. Sadly, (and naturally,) something didn't work out quite right. Chances are I missed something somewhere, but here's my dilemma:

When installing Ubuntu inside of Windows, it works fine. When I try booting into Ubuntu, it begins finishing the installation, but I get an error that says I should boot back into Windows, run chkdsk with the /r parameter, and try again. Hours later, still won't boot properly.

THEN I try installing using a DVD. It boots up fine, but when I get to the partitioning part and disk drive selection, it doesn't detect my hard disk, or any partitions of it. (It did however, detect a USB drive connected at the time.)

Computer specs are below, and I'm attempting to install Ubuntu 10.10. I have a 150GB partition set aside for Ubuntu, and it's formatted as NTFS.

I also might add that Ubuntu doesn't detect my USB wireless adapter. I think it isn't even receiving power. I've tried other USB ports, and it works fine in Windows.

Thanks in advance, any help is appreciated.

don't format the partition you want for ubuntu, leave it as unpartitioned space and try agian. me thinks that might show up better in the installer. although ntfs should show up....

First, don't install in Windows. NEVER. It's bad.

Second, don't partition the drive. Ubuntu has a drive partition program right in the installer. It will set everything up for you.

Third, run lsusb and see what it reports for your wireless dongle. The command in upper case is LSUSB but run it in lower case.

So in Disk Management I would just want to select "Delete Partition"?

Just saw your post. Seems like EVERYTHING run in Windows is bad. Linux installers, OC utilities... (I'm a noob, I'm aware)

So in Terminal, I would type in "LSUSB" (without quotes, obviously,) and then what?

The installation is still a no-go. Same as before, my drive wasn't detected.

Also, LSUSB detected my wireless adapter. How should I enable it? It's device # is 007. (James Bond.)

try 10.04, they might have a bug in the current 10.10 installer.
