WPA2PSK or WEP ? - Page 2

Any slow down with WPA2 will be much less than when your connection is cracked due to using WEP.

My question to you fine ladies & gents would be; what security flaws and or network issues can I expect to see having switched to WPA2PSK ?

Thanks !
Security flaws: You had WEP before, and now WPA2. In theory, WPA (and WPA2, the attack is the same) are still vulnerable to a dictionary attack. If it is a common SSID, people can download precomputed salted hash files and run through 10,000 keys a second (as compared to about 400-800 without the salted hash). Many dictionaries can still contain passwords about 15 characters long.

So: Use WPA2, an uncommon SSID (I always like setting my SSID to something humurous ), and a password containing random gibberish with letters, numbers, and symbols 20+ characters long; all for maximum security.

If you are knowledgeable about it, you could alternatively have some fun with noobs stealing your WIFI .

Also, note that the network slowdown you mention is NOT from switching to WPA2. It may be from some devices being only up to 802.11G speed, and your wireless router being wireless N (802.11N), which is faster. When you use a G device on an N network, the whole wireless network drops to G speeds. Unless your wireless router is dual band. Then it won't. Perhaps your new phone is not up to the same speeds as your laptop?

Other factors slowing stuff down may be torrents (turn off the pr0n!), or possibly a virus hogging bandwidth.
