Ramsinks for Graphics card

Thread Starter
Not sure if this belongs here or in the graphics card sections, could go in either I suppose...

Anyways. I've got some aluminum heat sinks that are generally applied to the ram on a video card, but I'm sure they're used on other things. I've got a few different style ones, plain silver aluminum with 4 vertical fins, resembling a tiny mail sorting tray and smaller blue ones with 4 rows of fins on both the x and y axis (16 total fins) like these http://www.zalman.com/DataFile/product/ZM-RHS1_m.jpg

Does one of these work better then the other? I've got 8 of each laying around here, and I'm getting ready to mount an aftermarket GPU cooler that doesnt allow for the backplate to be used.

just curious, doesnt seem to be any testing on the various kinds.

Usually the one with the most fins is best because more fins=more surface area

I´ve seen them used for cooling on mosfets a few times.
Those ones that are like the Zalmans should be fine , I´m using them and they do a pretty good job at dissipating heat.

I saw a few reviews years ago showing that these ramsinks performed worse than nothing at all if even a tiny airflow is present. The thermal transfer was so poor that it was proven to be better to have a bare surface. If you look around, I'm sure you can find it.

yes that is true, but if there isn't enough airflow around those heatsink they aren't that good because they build heat in itself and RAMs are hotter.
for example prolimatech mk-13 RAM heatsink->tall with higher fins but less space between them...had 2 of them on each RAM on 5850 and they were hotter than now with accelero extreme plus rams heatsinks, because I had only 1 fan on prolimatech, but if you add some airflow they can cool bigger OC.

so if you have good airflow around RAM heatsink bigger are better but if not something like accelero or zalman are better I would tell

Yeah but on the Zalman those fins are still spread out and there are more of them. And it doesn't really take that much airflow. Any case with a 120mm fan in front should provide sufficient airflow for those ramsinks. Johnny Thunder up there has a HAF 922 so he is fine with more fins.

I've got an HAF 922 full of fans and an Accelero twin turbo going on the GPU, so there will be 2 92mm fans blowing directly down onto the ramsinks. I would have preferred to use the bottom half of the factory cooler to keep the ram and voltage regs cool but they wont fit together with out some serious modification that will definitely void any warranty.

Thanks for the input everyone.
