Get sandy bridge 2600k. Screw custom water, it's too expensive and not needed. Get a corsair h70 and have fun with your 4.5-4.8 ghz overclock.

Use the money saved from your custom loop for 2x gtx580. You will be VERY happy.
Or don't listen to them and get the custom loop you want, just get the rasa kit, not that much more then an h70. Get the RS240 kit. then get some new tubing.

I'm researching AMD Bulldozer and sandy bridge as I type this.

I prefer to just go with the 5970 honestly, though I was considering 2 5870s... I think I would just prefer to WC one 5970 to 2 5870s...

And I'm going with cutom WC because I want to take on the challenge. It's a new obstacle to takle and spend some time learning.

get the rasa RS240 or RS360 kit. then upgrade the tubing. The RS240 can be had for about 130 dollars and the RS360 is about 150 or so dollars. then tubing is like 20 to 25 dollars. go with primochill or tygon. feser is good too.

Don't get the 5970, I came from crossfire 5870s. That card has some issues and microstutter is not fun. Either go 6*** series or nvidia imo.

So I'm googling like a mad man right now... I just don't understand.... Why is the 5970 $600, but the 'better' 6970 around $380? Is one 6970 really better than one 5970?

The 6970 is single gpu. I can't imagine it being better than the 5970.

No, The 5970 is better. Its a dual GPU card though. The 6970 is the best card besides the 5970, because someone above warned against the 5970 because of micro-stuttering. I personally own the 6970 and love it. BUT there is away to flash the BIOS of the 6950 to the 6970, im sure theres a guide somewhere on OCN. I suggest doing that because it'll be alot cheaper than the 6970.

If you are considering Nvidia though I would suggest the 570, from what i've read the 580 isn't that much more of a performance increase from the 580 and its alot cheaper.

Hope that helped

Yeah, that was my bad. I was talking ATI cards other than the 5970. Sorry.
