Choke/Phase Sizes: Quality Difference?

Heya you motherboard gurus, I have a question.

Does the physical size of each individual choke or phase or whatever make a difference in quality/performance? Here's a comparison of the ASUS Sabertooth 55i and the Maximus III Formula motherboards.






As you can tell, the Formula has more phases, however they're smaller than the Sabertooth's.

Depends on the kind of phases, but generally more phases = more efficient power delivery. However, those 16+ phases on enthusiast motherboards don't really matter unless you have a 24/7 4+ Ghz OC or are doing a LN2 run. Looking at the model number of each phase/capacitor would tell you much more.

the phase is usually the limiting component and will have an amperage limit. Other than that the MOSFETs are the most important part because they actually change 12v to 1.6v, the PWM controls the MOSFET's drivers, and inductors or chokes help clean up the voltage, and capacitors reduce ripple and stabilize voltage.

So do the physical size of the chokes affect performance?

no it shouldn't. Performance of the VRM is decided by te PWM and the MOSFETs and their Drivers, Choke and capacitors and even inductors(which are chokes and found on digital vrms) just help clean up the voltage, the actual transient response and power output come from the PWM and MOSFETs and drivers and how they work together.
