ATI Graphics Card problem...

Hi all. Just joined up to post this question.

Today my friend gave me an Intel Pentium 4 (3ghz), a DVD drive and a "256mb ATI 96000 XT"

I was at his place yesterday and the graphics card had no problems. I loaded it into my computer and I plugged it into my vga/dvi monitor. Now, it wouldn't work at first. I installed something called "Catalist" (the drivers) and it all seemed pretty seamless. I re-booted with the card plugged into the mobo, I went through the BIOS well, and then booted into Windows XP.

It started off okay, the logo faded in. Then were the progress bar should have appeared, it made a random (if bad) splash line of colours across the screen. It went into the desktop but ... Instead of what you'd expect, it just came up random lines of colour, running top-to-bottom.

So I un-installed the driver and whatnot, re-installed windows.
Now the problem gets worse. My computer seems to only want to boot from Onboard regardless of card inserted or not! And even if I did get it going, I would just be thrown through the endless torment of faulty drivers, bad hardware etc.

The only drivers I can find on ATi's website are all labelled/tagged for AMD - Which I don't even have.

New Case
2004 Albatron PM800 mobo
3ghz pentium 4 (hyperthreading enabled)
256mb ATI Radeon 9600xt
40gb HDD (doesn't matter, does it?)
windows XP Home SP3 32-bit (windows 7 install disc as well)

I know my specs aren't 2011-worthy, but it's the best I can do on my budget ;D

Thanks for any and all who can help me <3

You could try something like this.
Download driver sweeper.
http://downloads.guru3d.com/Guru3D--...load-1655.html

Install it and then boot in safe mode (press f8 when booting) . When in safe mode, run driver sweeper and let it clean all NVIDIA, ATI drivers . reboot and go into bios and disable onboard VGA as some MB´s are fussy, reboot and install your Catalyst control center again.

My motherboard doesn't appear to have a Disable onboard graphics (not even in different wording) ... It appears to, in fact, only disable it when a graphics card is inserted. I know this because I have a faulty nVIDIA GeForce 2 which used to work perfectly but I busted a capacitor when dusting it off. Now the mobo still reads it, doesn't display anything through Onboard, and the card doesn't display anything (dead, of course)

Thankyou for the driver sweeper. I've read up on some further instructions last night; I need Catalist 7.3 and to install it while the card isn't inserted.

Its called Catalyst or you can call it CCC. I see your new to ATi I guess. So welcome to the Red Tide, it more fun then the Green Goober Team. ^_^ Enjoy your stay, and never say the "N" Word (Nvidia), or you will burn for a thousand years, lol jk.
